Safecast Pocatello Valley is dedicated to providing transparent, accurate, and comprehensive radiation contamination data to the Pocatello Valley and other areas of Southeast Idaho. About Us:
Following in the tradition of the Safecast Network, Safecast Pocatello Valley is dedicated to providing transparent, accurate, and comprehensive radiation contamination data to the Pocatello Valley and othe
r areas of Southeast Idaho. Phosphate mining and refining activities have generated significant quantities of a waste product commonly known as slag, which has been used historically as a building, paving, and ground stabilizing material, and may still be in use for these purposes to this day. Slag contains elevated quantities of radioactive elements as well as dangerous heavy metals and its presence in the community poses a significant health hazard. The local, state, and federal authorities have been unwilling and unable to provide transparent data on the contamination situation making it difficult for members of the community to become informed and take measures to avoid exposure. In light of this, we are working to provide this information using cutting-edge scientific equipment to deliver this data to the Safecast network, who provide an open source mapping system to publicly display contamination information in a simple, easy to read format.
