Pocahontas County Youth Stay Active Through Summer Learning Opportunities

Summer has been filled with learning, creativity, and adventure for youth participating in programs offered through ISU Extension and Outreach Pocahontas County.

Local youth kicked off the season by creating colorful flower arrangements during the Bucket of Flowers Workshop. Clover Kids and 4-H members designed projects that can be exhibited at the upcoming Pocahontas County Fair while learning about plants and gardening.

Youth interested in caring for children strengthened their skills during a Babysitting Clinic. Participants learned about safety, responsibility, communication, and age-appropriate childcare practices to help prepare them for future babysitting opportunities.

The county's youngest participants, Clover Kids for members in grades K-3 explored the outdoors through a Clover Kids Outdoor Explore Workshop, where they created tic tac toe game boards using painted rocks and wooden boards while learning about nature and creativity.

Junior 4-H members from across the region also enjoyed a memorable educational day trip. Participants visited Hansen's Dairy Farm near Hudson to learn about dairy production and animal care, toured the John Deere Museum in Waterloo to explore agricultural history, and finished the day building friendships at Lost Island Waterpark.

These summer activities are just a few examples of the many opportunities available through the 4-H Youth Development program. Through hands-on learning experiences, youth continue to develop life skills, explore new interests, and build connections within their communities.

As summer approaches, did you know well owners are responsible for all testing and maintaining of their household drinking water? Annual upkeep is essential to ensure clean and safe water for your family.

Keep your well protected this spring and summer by:
- checking and changing water treatment filters
- scheduling an annual water test
- scheduling well maintenance or inspections
- paying attention to debris around well head, being careful while landscaping & taking other steps to protect your well against contamination

4-H Members that have completed grades 7-8 register now for two full days of fun as we travel to Kansas City Missouri for our 2026 Intermediate Overnight Trip, August 4 and 5th!

Members from Buena Vista, Hamilton, Humboldt, Pocahontas and Webster Counties will spend the day at Worlds and Oceans of Fun, tour the KC Royals Baseball Stadium and more!

Cost is just $50 thanks to generous donations made to our Pocahontas County Endowment. Spots are limited, be sure to register via 'events' in your 4-H Online account at https://4honline.com/. Call our office with questions at 335-3103.

Livestock Drug Disclosures are required and are due back to the ISU Extension and Outreach Pocahontas County Office by July 1.

Please see attached photos for the Drug Disclosures for each species of animals. The "back page" only needs to be filled out if you have given drugs to your animal. The front page for your species needs to be filled out no matter what if you plan to sell your animal at the fair.

Keep an eye out for poison hemlock and wild parsnip, which are a threat to humans and animals. Both are common across Illinois and are in bloom this time of year.
• Poison hemlock is highly toxic. Ingestion can result in death for humans and animals. It has white, airy flowers and hollow, purple-spotted stems.
• The sap of wild parsnip causes skin blisters and burns 24-72 hours after sunlight exposure. It has yellow, airy flowers and singly pinnate leaves. It is a serious threat to grazing livestock.

Look for these tall, imposing plants in unmowed ditches, fence lines, and overgrown areas. When found, remove or destroy them following control recommendations. Report sightings to property owners and/or managers.
