Plymouth Fire Department Awarded Federal SAFER Grant to Hire Four Firefighters
The Plymouth Professional Firefighters are excited to announce that the Town of Plymouth has been awarded a federal Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant from FEMA. This significant grant will allow for the hiring of four new firefighters, which translates to one additional firefighter per shift.
The SAFER grant is highly competitive, with only 207 communities nationwide receiving it this cycle. Notably, Plymouth is the sole town in New Hampshire to be awarded funds specifically for the hiring of new firefighters. The SAFER grant will cover a portion of salaries and benefits for these four new firefighters, with a total grant award of $787,944.
This grant is a meaningful investment in public safety. Having four firefighters on each shift aligns our department with nationally recognized standards, enhances operational effectiveness during emergencies, and enables crews to carry out crucial tasks with greater efficiency. The increase to four firefighters leads to quicker victim rescues, improved fire control, and safer working conditions for all firefighters. Moreover, maintaining this staffing level allows the department to have both ambulances staffed in the event of simultaneous calls, which occurred 423 times last year.
The Plymouth Selectboard approved the acceptance of the SAFER Grant on October 14, 2025, however, the final approval will be presented as a warrant article during the Town Meeting scheduled for March 11, 2026. We encourage everyone to support the Plymouth Fire Department and the Plymouth Professional Firefighters by voting in favor of the warrant article at Town Meeting. We would like to express our gratitude to the Selectboard and Town Manager for their support.
