Our recent article includes an excerpt from Marshall County historian Daniel McDonald's "History of Marshall County," published in 1881 and from Chief Pokagon's novel “O-gi-maw-kwe Mit-i-gwa-ki, Queen of the Woods.”

"Simon Pokagon was born at what was known as Pokagon village, on the Pottawattomie lands in Indiana in 1830. He was sent to Notre Dame University, where he graduated with honors.

A short time before his death he wrote the story of his courtship and marriage to Lonidaw, a fair Pottawattomie maiden. The great charm of the story, “Queen of the Woods,” lies in the simplicity with which the lover pours forth the passion of his heart."

đź—˝ Have you ever wondered why there is a mini Statue of Liberty in front of the Marshall County Courthouse? The story behind it is quite interesting and you can thank the Boy Scouts of America for its presence. These "Little Sister of Liberty" statues were mass produced and sent around the nation. Learn more in our recently uploaded article.

Did you know that Marshall County has a small replica of the Statue of Liberty? It sits on the courthouse lawn in Plymouth.
