The Coeur d'Alene Tribe

The Coeur d'Alene Tribe Welcome to the official page for the Schitsu'umsh - the Coeur d'Alene Tribe. The Coeur d'Alene Tribe has been in this homeland for many thousands of years.
(2)

The original homeland spans almost five million acres, stretching from Montana in the east to the Spokane River Valley in present day Washington State, from near the Canadian border in the north to near the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater Rivers in north Idaho. Tribal traditions includes a respect and reverence for natural law, and creates a powerful voice for responsible environmental stew

ardship. In the ancient tribal language, members call themselves, "Schitsu'umsh," meaning "The Discovered People" or "Those Who Are Found Here." The name, "Coeur d'Alene" was given to the tribe in the late 18th or early 19th century by French traders and trappers. In French, it means "Heart of the Awl," referring to the sharpness of the trading skills exhibited by tribal members in their dealings with visitors. Today, the Coeur d'Alene Tribe has sovereign authority over the 345,000 acre reservation located in north Idaho. Tribal headquarters are in Plummer, approximately 35 miles south of the city of Coeur d'Alene. The Tribe is governed by a Tribal Council. Council members are elected to three-year terms by the general membership of the Tribe, which current numbers over 2,400. The Tribal government operates through nineteen departments, whose directors report to Tribal Council. The Coeur d'Alene Tribe today is one of the largest employers in the region, employing nearly 2,000 people in tribal government, gaming, hospitality, healthcare, fitness and wellness promotion, physical therapy, youth programs, education, agricultural, and other business enterprises. The Tribe has an economic impact of more than $330,000,000 on the state's economy and its operations generate more than $13 million in tax revenues for the state and local economies.

Update from Chairman Chief Allan:

“I am excited to share the Coeur d’Alene Tribe’s latest business venture. We are partnering with Ahlquist to develop Peregrine – a new 920-acre industrial, commercial, and residential development in Elmore County, near the future site of the Shoshone-Paiute Resort and Casino.

The Treasure Valley is one of the fastest-growing regions in the country and this venture puts us at the center of the action.

Peregrine will create economic opportunity for our Tribal Members, bring thousands of potential customers to the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes’ first resort and casino, and open doors for businesses across Idaho.

I want to make it clear Peregrine does not change our partnership with the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes. We are still fully committed to helping our brothers and sisters open and operate their first resort and casino and the permitting process is moving forward. This new investment in the region is a reflection of our confidence in our partnership and the project. We are proud to be part of what’s coming to this region, and we look forward to keeping our members updated in the weeks and months to come.”

Called Peregrine, the new mixed-use plan would support the Sho-Pai casino and thousands of new homes planned of southeast of Micron.

Coeur d’Alene Tribe Swears in Newly Elected Officials -
The Coeur d’Alene Tribe Tribal Council election was held on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at the Tribal Headquarters in Plummer, Idaho, for two seats. Incumbent Caj Matheson was re-elected, while Sam Harding was elected to the second seat, succeeding longtime Council member Ernie Stensgar, who served the Tribe for 45 years.
The new Council unanimously re-elected Chief J. Allan as Chairman and elected Gene Hemene James as Vice Chairman and Margaret SiJohn as Secretary Treasurer.

The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Rose Creek Longhouse in Worley, Idaho, on May 4, 2026, with Tribal membership and staff in attendance.

In remarks to the Tribal membership, leadership emphasized the importance of continued strength, unity, and service to the people of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe. The newly seated Council looks forward to building on the Tribe’s progress while addressing future opportunities and challenges.

Chief Allan has served as Chairman since 2005. Caj Matheson continues his service on the Tribal Council, and Sam Harding joins the Council with a commitment to serving the Tribe and its membership.

The Tribal Council also took time to honor Ernie Stensgar for his 45 years of dedicated service. During the ceremony, Stensgar reflected on the many leaders he worked alongside over the years and the growth he has witnessed within the Tribe. He spoke about a time when the Tribe was much smaller and shared pride in seeing how far it has come, noting the strength and progress of the Tribe today. He also expressed appreciation for the next generation stepping forward to lead.

Chairman Chief Allan spoke on Stensgar’s impact, noting the role he played in mentoring and shaping leadership within the Tribe.
“Ernie has been a leader not just through his work, but through the way he guided others,” Allan said.

“He helped shape me into the leader I am today, and his knowledge, dedication, and commitment to our people will always be a part of this Tribe moving forward.”

The Coeur d’Alene Tribe extends its sincere gratitude to Ernie Stensgar for his years of service and lasting contributions to the community.

Following the ceremony, both re-elected Council member Caj Matheson and newly elected Council member Sam Harding shared words of appreciation and commitment to the Tribal membership.

“Thanks to everyone who came out and voted, regardless of who you voted for,” Matheson said. “This is an exciting time for our Tribe and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next three years. I will work diligently with our leadership and tribal membership to bring us as far along as possible. My deepest respects to longtime councilman and former Chairman, Ernie Stensgar. His legacy will go on and we all stand on his shoulders as we keep up the work.”

Harding also expressed his gratitude and readiness to serve. “Thank you to my fellow Coeur d’Alene tribal members for the support and for voting me onto your tribal council. I vow to do my best to serve your interests and to further advance our tribe,” he said.

He continued, “Congratulations to Caj Matheson for winning reelection. To Ernie Stensgar, what a run. After the results came in, I drove over to Plummer and shook his hand and thanked him for his 45 years. Now the work begins. Complacency isn’t how I roll, and I will work to fulfill what the people want. I serve you now, if there’s anything you want to discuss, I always make myself approachable and accessible.”

Harding also noted the historic nature of his election, becoming the first Coeur d’Alene Tribal member to simultaneously serve on both a city council and the Tribal Council, calling it an honor to represent and serve in both roles.

A historic moment for the Coeur d’Alene Tribe.

After decades of work, the Coeur d’Alene Tribe and the State of Idaho have announced a historic water rights settlement, bringing long-standing water rights issues in North Idaho to a close and protecting the future of our waters.

This agreement affirms the Tribe’s water rights and helps ensure long-term protection of Coeur d’Alene Lake and the waters that sustain our homelands, while also providing certainty for communities throughout the region.

Chairman Chief Allan noted that this milestone reflects generations of Tribal leaders and members who worked to protect the Tribe’s natural resources and waters for the future.

This is a historic moment for our Tribe, our homelands, and the generations who will follow.

Big news for the Coeur d’Alene Tribe.

Another 12,750 acres has been brought back into Tribal ownership through the recent purchase from Stimson Lumber. That brings the total to over 42,000 acres reacquired in the past two years.

This is land within our homelands. Land that once left Tribal hands is now being cared for by the Tribe again.

As Chief Allan shared, “Our vision has not changed. We will continue to buy land within our homelands whenever the opportunity arises.”

This is what stewardship looks like. This is what long-term vision looks like. This is the Tribe continuing to take care of the place our people have always called home.'
