McCroskey State Park

McCroskey State Park McCroskey State Park These 5,000 + acres comprise the third
largest and second oldest state park in
Idaho. There are
several roadside pull-outs.

McCroskey State Park was given to the
People of Idaho in 1955 by Virgil
Talmage McCroskey in honor of his
mother Mary Minerva McCroskey and
all other pioneer women of the
Northwest. The park is a lasting tribute to the
conservation vision and tireless efforts
of one man who dedicated his life to
caring for nature so that its power and
tranquility could be passed along as a
source of enjoym

ent from one generation
to the next. Mostly timberland with spectacular
wildflowers in the western portion, the
park is comprised of a mosaic of different
forest and grassland vegetation. Ponderosa pine dominate most sites,
with Douglas fir comprising about a third
of the area. Grand fir and cedar occur on
some northern slopes and in lower drainages. Head high mountain maple and alders line
many of the vegetation transition zones. The park has four picnicking areas and
three primitive camping areas. Skyline Drive
is over 17 miles long and provides access
to more than 30 miles of multiple use
trails. For more info visit our website at: www.parksandrecreation.idaho.gov

We don’t make decisions lightly in Idaho State Parks, and appreciate UI helping us to make the process more informed. Many thanks to those that participated in this project: the students that did interviews and helped analyze the responses, faculty and graduate students, neighboring land owners, trail users, conservation organizations, campers, and importantly Schitsu'umsh, the Coeur d’Alene tribe who were here since time immemorial. Public land matters to us all and it’s important for everyone to have a voice in how it is managed.

McCroskey Park project shows University of Idaho students the importance of stakeholder input in management of public lands.

To all who love McCroskey State Park:

We are seeking your help! To continue to preserve and improve this beautiful place, we are looking for people who would be willing to be interviewed by a team of students from the University of Idaho that are assisting us in a survey.

We’d like information on how to improve motorized and non-motorized trail usage, accessibility, with preservation of this important resource for generations to come a top priority.

Please send us a direct message or email us at [email protected] if you’re interested. Thank you!

Due to unhealthy air quality and per order of the Department of Environmental Quality, we will be implementing an open burn ban at Dworshak, Wi******er, McCroskey, and Hells Gate State Parks. This means no campfires, charcoal, or gas fire rings. You can still use gas cookstoves.

Thank you for your understanding!

Exciting things in the works! We are expanding public recreation, education, and resource preservation through thoughtful land management and development. With the insight and research generated from our partners at UI we are working on a new day use area that encompasses palouse prairie education, preservation, and restoration.

Attention incoming campers to McCroskey State Park:

At 12:01am on Wednesday, August 9th, 2023, Stage 2 Fire Restrictions will go into effect in the Northern 5 Idaho counties, which includes McCroskey State Park.

What does this mean if you're camping at McCroskey?

All open flame fires are prohibited in the park. This includes building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire. Portable campfire rings are NOT permitted in state parks that have the burn ban. Absolutely NO open flame devices are allowed.

The ONLY exceptions to the rule at state parks are for cooking stoves that are enclosed gas, propane, or butane type camp stoves with an ON/OFF switch.

Please come prepared if you are planning to camp at McCroskey, and only bring liquid gas camp stoves with an on/off switch and plenty of water as our well is significantly underperforming.

Attention: We are doing maintenance on the water system starting 7/20 which has resulted in the water lines needing to be purged. We're working as quickly as possible, but there may not be water available through the weekend. We apologize for the inconvenience.
