HOUSE FIRE – WAR EAGLES WAY At approximately 2:27 p.m. today, September 1, the Pleasant View Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a reported house fire in the 9000 block of War Eagles Way. Our first unit arrived within four minutes of dispatch and found heavy fire coming from the rear and sides of the home, with fire already extending into the attic and roof. Firefighters made a quick and aggressive attack while protecting the homes on both sides, which were located only a few feet away. Both neighboring homes sustained some exterior damage, but firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading into either residence. Thankfully, there were no injuries to residents or firefighters. Unfortunately, the family did lose a pet, and the home sustained extensive damage. We ask everyone to keep this family in your thoughts and prayers as they deal with this devastating loss. We also want to address a question many people have asked because this home is located in a fully sprinkler-protected subdivision: How does a home with fire sprinklers sustain this much damage? This is the third fire in this subdivision in the past several months. In the previous two fires, the residential sprinkler systems activated and successfully contained the fires until firefighters arrived. Today’s fire was different. Preliminary findings indicate the fire started outside on or near the rear deck, spread into combustible materials and the exterior siding, and then traveled upward into the attic. Residential sprinkler systems are designed primarily to protect the occupied areas of a home. Residential attic spaces are not required to have sprinkler protection. Once this fire entered the attic, it was able to spread rapidly throughout the roof system. The sprinkler system did not fail. The fire developed outside the areas the system was designed to protect. Residential fire sprinklers remain extremely effective and are an important life-safety feature. We have seen firsthand in this same neighborhood how quickly they can control an interior fire and protect a family. The fire remains under investigation. However, improperly discarded smoking materials are being considered as a possible ignition source. This is an important reminder that smoking outdoors does not eliminate the danger of fire. Please completely extinguish all smoking materials and dispose of them in a sturdy, noncombustible container. Never discard ci******es or ashes near patio furniture, mulch, flowerpots, landscaping, siding or other combustible materials. Smoke alarms, residential sprinklers, safe practices and a quick fire department response all work together to protect our community. We are thankful no human lives were lost today and proud of the quick work of our firefighters who prevented this incident from becoming a multiple-home fire. Pleasant View Volunteer Fire Department
