This month, the Ashley-Hudson Volunteer Fire Department is proud to recognize Firefighter Matthew Fortna as our Spotlight Firefighter of the Month!
Matt exemplifies the dedication and commitment that make the volunteer fire service so special. As a dual-department member serving both the Ashley-Hudson Volunteer Fire Department and the Salem Center Volunteer Fire Department, he consistently answers the call to serve his communities whenever help is needed.
Whether it's responding to emergencies, participating in training, or supporting department activities, Matt's willingness to step up and serve reflects the true spirit of the fire service. His commitment to protecting and helping others makes him a valued member of both departments.
Please join us in congratulating Matthew Fortna and thanking him for his service, dedication, and continued commitment to our communities.
Congratulations, Matt, and thank you for all that you do!

This past week, two members of the Ashley-Hudson Volunteer Fire Department had the privilege of attending the First Responders' Ball, an event that brought together first responders from across Indiana, including firefighters, EMS personnel, law enforcement officers, corrections officers, parole officers, and military personnel.
The evening was much more than a celebration—it was an opportunity to network, learn, and engage in meaningful conversations surrounding the mental health challenges facing first responders. In partnership with the American Foundation for Su***de Prevention, speakers highlighted the realities of PTSD, depression, cumulative stress, and the importance of breaking the stigma surrounding mental health within our profession.
As first responders, we witness situations that most people will never experience. Events like this remind us that taking care of our mental health is just as important as taking care of our physical health. Through education, peer support, and open conversations, we can continue building a stronger and healthier first responder community.
We are proud that our members represented Ashley-Hudson Volunteer Fire Department at this important event and brought back valuable knowledge and resources that can help support our department and our fellow first responders.
Together, we can change the conversation. Together, we can make a difference.
