You may have noticed bat houses in some of our parks, and more are on the way!
Bat houses provide safe roosting habitat for native bats, an important part of Iowa's ecosystem. These incredible nighttime flyers offer a variety of natural benefits to our parks and community.
𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁?
🦟 Natural Insect Control
A single bat can consume hundreds to thousands of flying insects in a night, including mosquitoes, moths, beetles, and other nuisance bugs. Bats are one of nature's most effective nighttime insect hunters.
🌸 Healthier Gardens & Landscapes
By helping reduce populations of insects that feed on plants, bats support healthier flowers, trees, gardens, and natural areas. Their presence is an important part of maintaining a balanced ecosystem.
🌎 Support Local Wildlife
Iowa is home to several native bat species that need safe places to rest and raise their young. Bat houses help provide habitat where natural roosting sites such as dead trees may be limited.
Next time you're at one of our parks around sunset, keep an eye on the sky and you might spot one of these amazing creatures at work!

🎣 Have you heard about Iowa Department of Natural Resources 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 program?
This summer, the Iowa DNR is making it easier than ever to get outside and enjoy fishing! Keep an eye out at Hickory Glen Park as DNR staff visit with their mobile fishing trailer, offering loaner fishing poles, tackle, and bait.

🏓 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻!
Eastern Polk County Pickleball is offering a Mixed Doubles Team Pickleball league this summer (2 Men, 2 Women per team). Teams will play six games per match but each individual will only play in 3 of those games giving everyone a chance to rest and get out of the summer heat during the match.

🚴‍♀️ 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗿
Join City staff and community members as we celebrate Pleasant Hill's newly completed 5.7-mile trail loop. The route will highlight portions of the Youngstown Trail, Gay Lea Wilson Trail, and new trail connections along SE 6th Avenue and the Highway 65 Bypass.
Whether you choose to bike, walk, run, or roll, this family-friendly event is a great opportunity to experience the growing trail network and enjoy the outdoors with friends and neighbors.

Grab your paddles and head to the courts for a great cause! Join Eastern Polk County Pickleball for an Open Pickleball event to support Alzheimer awareness.
When: Sunday, June 21st from 4:30 PM – 7:30 PM
Where: Altoona Campus
Cost: Free will donations will be accepted, with all proceeds going directly to the Alzheimer's Foundation.

🏓𝗕𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗣𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻
Eastern Polk County Pickleball (EPCP) club is offering a FREE three-week course in the game of pickleball.
June 11, 18, 25 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm, Hickory Glen Park, Pleasant Hill (Adult 18+ only)
This course is for beginning players new to the game and will start from the basics: Court layout, terminology, rules, and the basic skills to play the game.
During the three-week course we will teach you how the game is played through a little bit of lecture to develop understanding, some drills to demonstrate the fundamentals and game time while being coached to bring it all together.
If you have wanted to learn to play pickleball, put don’t know where to start, this may be the option you've been looking for.
The space limit for this session is 12 players.
Our instructors are all volunteers from the Eastern Polk County Pickleball club sharing their knowledge. We will provide the balls and have some paddles available for players to borrow. Just wear some good fitting sports shoes.

🚧 𝗚𝗮𝘆 𝗟𝗲𝗮 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗧𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 🚧
Beginning Thursday, May 28, the Gay Lea Wilson Trail will be temporarily closed between Fairview Dr. and Scott Ave. for storm sewer improvements.
The estimated closure duration is approximately 2–3 weeks.
Construction work will involve:
✅ Storm sewer intake reconstruction
✅ Replacement of select storm sewer structures
✅ Drainage improvements to enhance trail safety
⚠️ Please use caution around active construction areas and plan ahead for alternative routes.
🔗 See the Park & Trail Map in the comments for alternate route options and closure updates. The Scott Ave. Trailhead and Christie Lane Trailhead will remain open during construction.
