Pleasant Hill Parks and Recreation

Manages public parks and open spaces for the City of Pleasant Hill, Iowa. This includes wetlands, prairie and native landscape, woodlands, trails, and trees.

Pleasant Hill Parks and Recreation is responsible for managing 334 acres of land, 2 community parks, 4 neighborhood parks, and over 7 miles of trails, as well as open spaces. ⚠️ 𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘 𝟵/𝟳: The Doanes Park Splash Pad will be closing for the season Tuesday, September 8 (after Labor Day).
The splash pad is scheduled to reopen on May 29, 2027 (Memorial Day Weekend).

🌳 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀!
At last night’s City Council meeting, outgoing Parks and Recreation Commissioners Austin Bittner and Loren Lown were recognized for their years of service on the Pleasant Hill Parks and Recreation Commission.
𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿 – 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 (𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟵–𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲)
Austin has been a strong advocate for parks and a valued community partner. During his service, he participated on playground selection committees, volunteered for tree plantings and park projects, and helped review important community concerns. Austin consistently brought thoughtful questions, a collaborative approach, and a genuine commitment to improving Pleasant Hill’s parks and recreation system.
𝗟𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗟𝗼𝘄𝗻 – 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 (𝟭𝟵𝟵𝟴–𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲)
Loren’s passion for conservation, woodland management, and habitat restoration has had a lasting impact on Pleasant Hill. During nearly three decades of service, he helped advance trail planning, land acquisition efforts, Bird Friendly Iowa initiatives, the establishment of Christie Lane Woodlands, and the City’s longstanding partnership with Polk County Conservation. His vision and dedication have helped shape the park system and natural areas our community enjoys today.

You may have noticed bat houses in some of our parks, and more are on the way!
Bat houses provide safe roosting habitat for native bats, an important part of Iowa's ecosystem. These incredible nighttime flyers offer a variety of natural benefits to our parks and community.
𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁?
🦟 Natural Insect Control
A single bat can consume hundreds to thousands of flying insects in a night, including mosquitoes, moths, beetles, and other nuisance bugs. Bats are one of nature's most effective nighttime insect hunters.
🌸 Healthier Gardens & Landscapes
By helping reduce populations of insects that feed on plants, bats support healthier flowers, trees, gardens, and natural areas. Their presence is an important part of maintaining a balanced ecosystem.
🌎 Support Local Wildlife
Iowa is home to several native bat species that need safe places to rest and raise their young. Bat houses help provide habitat where natural roosting sites such as dead trees may be limited.
Next time you're at one of our parks around sunset, keep an eye on the sky and you might spot one of these amazing creatures at work!
