Effective immediately the Governor has issued an Executive Order that bans the issuance of Open Burn Permits for 14 days. The Executive Order prohibits any fire chief or person designated by the fire chief from granting an open burn permit for any purpose. Any existing burn permit that has not been completed is null and void and open burning is not permitted for 14 consecutive days beginning now.

This order will be reviewed prior to its termination to determine the need to extend the ban. Further information will be provided prior to that date.

The Executive Order document will be issued later today when all required parties have signed it.

Please feel free to share this message as needed and contact me with any questions.

Thanks

Good morning everyone. With the recent snow, the decision has been made to lift the burn ban for the Plattsmouth Fire District. As a reminder, before you burn you need to get a burn permit from city hall (even if you live in outside of city limits) before you burn. Thanks everyone!!

Hello everyone. The Plattsmouth Fire District is in a complete burn ban. No fires or any type are permitted until we receive measurable precipitation. Conditions are very dry and the risk is very high for rapidly spreading fires. Please help us out by not having any type of outdoor fires until further notice. Thanks everyone!

We will have an official announcement on this at a later time but we want to send a MASSIVE thank you to Senator Deb Fischer for her efforts in securing this for the city. We also want to recognize Mayor Paul Lambert for his instrumental work with Senator Fisher to bring this to reality. It truly takes a village!! Again, we will post more information on this and the new aerial truck in the near future!!

SENATE APPROPRIATIONS ACT includes $1.8 million to replace Plattsmouth’s aerial ladder fire truck -

The funding was included in the Fiscal Year 2026 Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development (THUD) Appropriations Act. It’s been passed by Congress and signed into law. The announcement came from U.S. Senator Deb Fischer of Nebraska. The act contains over $60 million in funding to support infrastructure projects and firefighting capabilities across Nebraska. Also in this area: $3.4 million to complete the parallel taxiway and improve the lighting system at the Nebraska City Airport. Plattsmouth Mayor Paul Lambert lauded the efforts of Senator Fischer and her staff. “She does so much to help us and understands the needs of the community,” he said, adding that communication has been constant for the last couple of years. Also to be noted, said Lambert, is the work of the fire department and city staff, “Much needed to be done on our end and they did it.” The $1.8 million was the target number arrived at over two years ago. The Plattsmouth City Council awarded the bid for the new aerial unit in April of 2024. The council passed an ordinance allowing usage of public safety tax anticipation bonds to finance the purchase. This federal funding aligns with the loan portion of the cost left after the discounts and the down payment. PVFD is anticipating delivery of the new truck in 2028.

It’s with profound sadness we announce the passing of lifetime member William “Pappa Bill” Brittain. Bill was a cornerstone of the department during his extraordinary 67 years of service. Details of Bills service is below.

WILLIAM “BILL” HANFORD BRITTAIN
1928 – 2025
William “Bill” Hanford Brittain age 97 of Plattsmouth, NE passed away on Thursday, December 18, 2025 at Crown Pointe in Omaha, NE.
Bill was born on July 3, 1928 to Clyde Hanford Brittain and Eveline (Bostic) Brittain in Oxford, KS. At a young age, Bill moved with his family to Plattsmouth, where he attended school and began building the roots that would shape his life. It was there he met the love of his life, Margery “Peggy” Joan Kriskey. The two were united in marriage on April 11, 1953, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Plattsmouth, beginning a devoted partnership that spanned a lifetime.
He proudly enlisted in the United States Army, serving his country with honor from 1954 until 1956. During his service, Bill and Peggy made their home in Fort Knox, Kentucky. Following his honorable discharge, they returned to Plattsmouth, where they settled, raised their children, and remained active members of the community they loved.
Bill was employed at the Ice House in Plattsmouth before joining Mini Gas Company, where he served as general manager. Known for his strong work ethic and dedication to others, Bill had a true servant’s heart. His desire to help people led him to serve as a volunteer firefighter with the Plattsmouth Volunteer Fire Department, where he later rose to the role of Fire Chief. He was also a founding father of the Plattsmouth Rescue Squad, an honor that reflected his leadership, commitment, and deep care for his community.
He is survived by his daughter: Kathy Hall and husband Dan of Omaha, NE; son: Dayne Brittain and Charline Moorman of Magnolia, IA; five grandchildren: Erica Bower and husband Justin, Roger Hall, Mitch Brittain and wife Alyssa, Tony Brittain and Michelle, and Jason Neuman and wife Emmy; eight great grandchildren: Pyper Bower, Bryton Bower, Rhys Bower, Wyatt Brittain, Sawyer Brittain, Alaina Grisafe, Donovan Foster, and Damien Foster; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
