In May, students in Ms. Sharlow’s class at Rise Plattsburgh welcomed Staff Sergeant Derrick “Sonny” Venne as a guest speaker, where he shared his powerful experiences serving in the military alongside his sister, Mrs. Dawn Bordeau. He spoke with students about courage, commitment, and the importance of service to others.

Staff Sergeant Venne also reflected on being activated after September 11, 2001, and later serving a year in Afghanistan. His firsthand account helped students gain a deeper understanding of military service and the lasting impact of 9/11.

The visit provided a meaningful learning experience that brought history to life and encouraged a greater appreciation for the sacrifices made by veterans and service members. Ms. Sharlow’s class extends sincere gratitude to Staff Sergeant Venne for inspiring students through his story and service.

Creativity was on full display in Ms. Carroll's classes at our Plattsburgh campus as students created colorful paintings using their feet! 🎨👣

This unique art activity gave students the opportunity to explore self-expression in a fun and engaging way while creating one-of-a-kind masterpieces. The smiles, laughter, and creativity made for a memorable experience for everyone involved.

⌨️ Empowering Student Success Through Adaptive Technology ⌨️

An adaptable keyboard has helped one student gain confidence, strengthen communication skills, and become more independent in the classroom. Since beginning to use the device, the student made impressive progress in typing, developing greater hand and arm coordination, muscle memory, and the ability to express thoughts and ideas more effectively through writing.

The student enjoyed practicing typing skills with staff and using Typing.com to improve speed and accuracy. This growth led to increased participation, greater independence, and a sense of pride in communicating alongside peers. Stories like this highlight how the right supports and adaptive tools can open doors to new opportunities and help students reach their full potential.

Students in Melissa Gough's class explored the meaning of yearbooks and the lasting memories they represent. They learned about the tradition of signing yearbooks and enjoyed collecting messages from friends while connecting with students from other classrooms throughout the Rise Center Mineville community.
