PUBLIC SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT

If you see a downed wire, STAY AWAY from it and keep others away as well.

Many people assume that communication lines such as telephone, cable, or internet wires are safe because they do not normally carry dangerous voltage. However, if those lines come into contact with damaged electrical lines anywhere along the route, they can become energized and pose a serious shock or electrocution hazard.

Additionally, if you see wires hanging in or tangled in a tree, DO NOT attempt to cut down the tree or remove branches yourself. Trees and limbs place tension on utility lines. Cutting a branch or tree can suddenly change that tension, causing wires to move unexpectedly, break additional lines, or even pull down utility poles. In some cases, the top of a pole can snap and fall without warning, creating a life-threatening situation for anyone nearby.

If you encounter downed wires:

• Stay at least 30 feet away.
• Keep children, pets, and vehicles away from the area.
• Do not touch the wire or anything in contact with it.
• Do not attempt to move branches or trees affecting the line.
• Report the hazard immediately to the utility company and local authorities.

No inconvenience is worth risking a life. Treat every downed wire as if it is energized until utility personnel confirm otherwise.
