Deputy Juvenile Officer -
This is entry level professional work in the enforcement and administration of the Missouri juvenile justice system. Employees in this class are expected to work with some degree of independence. Close supervision is received from, and work is continually reviewed by the Chief Juvenile Officer.
An employee in this position is vested with the statutory authority of a Juvenile Officer to take charge of children who come under the jurisdiction of the Juvenile Court. This position is expected to exercise supervision over juveniles under the Court’s jurisdiction.
Examples of Work Performed (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)
Responds with supervision to daily referrals made by law enforcement agencies, schools or parents.
Responds with supervision to emergency juvenile intake after hours and or on weekends and holidays.
As directed by the Chief Juvenile Officer detains juveniles who may be charged with criminal offenses; provides and explains legal rights to the alleged offender.
As directed by the Chief Juvenile Officer authorizes the removal of children from the family home, due to alleged allegations of abuse. Authorizes the protective custody of victims of child abuse / neglect.
With supervision conducts in-depth interviews of youth referred for status offenses or delinquencies.
Transports delinquent juveniles to local, regional or contracted detention centers.
With supervision, conducts informal conferences with juveniles and parents to discuss rights of juvenile and alternative methods to formal charges and court.
With supervision, conducts formal conferences with juveniles and parent to discuss formal charges brought against juvenile and to advise juvenile of rights.
Prepares court reports to reflect the assessment and proposed plans of intervention.
Attends pre-court staffing between Department of Social Services, Juvenile Office and attorneys.
Works with the Chief Juvenile Officer and Juvenile Office Attorney to adjudicate contested cases before the Juvenile Court.
Testifies before the Court and makes recommendations based on evidence, client history and statutory requirements.
Supervises juveniles placed on probation by establishing guidelines and completion requirements for probation agreements and community service.
Monitors probation plan including regular onsite visits to the juvenile’s school and home.
Monitors compliance with Court orders by offenders on probation or under informal supervision. Enforces the terms and conditions of probation. Prepares Motions to Modify and revocation reports when necessary.
Monitors the juveniles / families attendance and participation in mandated treatment programs.
Arranges work restitution for offenders and monitoring the youth’s job performance.
Maintains accurate case records and required statistics.
Maintains working relationship with local school officials to monitor educational progress of juvenile on probation.
Represents the Juvenile Office at schools and community meetings and makes presentations as required.
Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Some knowledge of Juvenile Courts and procedures.
Basic knowledge of statutes and laws regarding juvenile cases.
Basic knowledge of personal computers and software.
Ability to communicate effectively with staff and public.
Ability to maintain professional integrity when dealing with hostile or uncooperative clients.
Ability to handle potentially hostile situations with a juvenile and family regarding a referral.
Required Education
Graduation from a four year college, or university, with a degree in Criminal Justice Administration, Criminology, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work or related field.
On call required, please have references available upon request.

The global spread of COVID-19 is affecting every one of us. We are all adapting and responding in accordance with Local, State and Federal recommendations. The Juvenile Office wants to continue to play a role in helping individuals and communities. With regards to the Juvenile Office Adolescents and Parents APT class held on Tuesday evenings, we are postponing class attendance for the next three weeks. The plan moving forward will be to monitor the virus situation and plan accordingly. I hope that we will be able to resume the class and all services after the three week postponement. Our office will notify you regarding the re engagement of the classes and services. The Homework for the (APT) class has been suspended for now, it will resume when the class is re engaged.

The Juvenile Office is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:p.m. However, we are not having in-office appointments. Your Juvenile Officer will contact you to reschedule any appointments that are already set. If you need to contact the Juvenile Office, please call 816-858-3420.
