The PVFA Annual BBQ is one of the largest and oldest City-wide traditions. The half-century old event will be held at Pine Island Park, 300 S. The program offers live music, kids’ games, bounce houses, raffle prizes, live demonstrations and much more. As part of the program, Head Chef Barry Stearns has maintained the urban legend surrounding Former Mayor Frank Veltri’s “Secret Sauce.” The firefigh

ters begin cooking at 4AM in the morning and continue throughout the day. The PVFA Care-A-Little program was developed was originally developed as a way to assist school-aged children in the City of Plantation who need help with self-esteem and personal issues or are “at risk” for trouble. The program raises money to provide these kids, as identified by the school system, with clothing, medical, dental or eye care, gifts at holiday time and, if necessary, food or furniture. The goal of Care-A-Little is to help these children feel better about themselves so they can remain in school and help improve themselves and their family or personal situation.

A Message from the Outgoing President
To the Members of the PVFA and the Plantation Community,
When I first joined the Plantation Volunteer Fire Association back in 1982, I used to hear a familiar phrase all the time: "You know, in five years, this place will be a paid career department."
Back then, I’d look around and wonder if they were right. But as I looked at the incredible people who made up the Plantation Fire Department and the PVFA, I saw something entirely unique. We were—and still are—a rare balance of dedicated men and women from all walks of life, bringing different careers, talents, and perspectives to the table. Every single person contributed something unique that pushed us forward. While other volunteer fire departments across the country were facing challenges and closing their doors, we thrived.
Along the way, I realized the secret to our success: it was always our members. Your dedication has kept us going strong since 1957, allowing us to remain one of the largest and most successful volunteer firefighter organizations in Florida and the entire Southeast.
A Different Perspective on Dedication
In 2018, I decided it was time to step up and help lead this great organization, first serving as your Vice President, and later, in 2024, as your President. Over these past eight years in office, I got to see our membership in a completely new light. I witnessed firsthand a level of motivation that goes far beyond responding to emergencies.
As an association officer, it was my responsibility to help spearhead our two massive annual fundraisers: our golf tournament and of course, the longest-running event in our city, the Firefighter BBQ. To witness the endless hours, sweat, and true dedication our members pour into these events behind the scenes was nothing short of amazing.
This past year, our BBQ was one of the most successful we have ever had. To me, that wasn't just a win for our newly formed scholarship program and community outreach; it was a definitive sign that our organization and our members will always step up. It proved exactly why the PVFA has stood the test of time.
Looking to the Future
As I step down, I do so truly honored and humbled and with absolute confidence in our future. I know that with Erik taking the reins as your new President, he will carry on our rich traditions and continue to serve this wonderful community with the same passion we’ve maintained since 1957.
Thank you, Plantation, for your unwavering support over the decades. I hope this gives you a little insight into why the Plantation Volunteer Fire Association is, and always will be, so deeply special to me and to all of you.
With gratitude and respect,
Mark Watters

Join us for the 5th Annual Rally For Raegan 5K Run/Walk Sun, May 31st 8:30 AM at Volunteer Park in Plantation! 🦄💜

Registration is still open https://runsignup.com/Race/FL/Plantation/RunForRaegan

Bring the whole family out for a morning filled with fun, community, and purpose. There will be 🚒 fire trucks, 💦 wet down sprays, 🎟 raffles, 🎁 giveaways, and more!

Raegan was named an Honorary Plantation Firefighter before she bravely lost her battle with DIPG, a very rare and aggressive brain cancer.

Her father, Lt. Marc Mize, has proudly served with the Plantation Fire Department for 22 years. 💪

This event is more than just a run. It’s a chance for our community to come together, honor Raegan’s memory, support critical research to help find a cure for DIPG, and to support our brother Marc Mize and his family.

We hope to see you there as we rally together for Raegan and for all families affected by this vicious monster DIPG. 💜
