YIG is a youth-run, youth-led model government that ensures that democracy is learned by every generation. Does your child like to argue? Then Plant City Youth in Government is the club for them. Club members will learn how to write bills, present their bills and debate their side effectively while defending their values. They will learn how the governmental process works from the inside, as Democ
racy must be learned by every generation. Youth in Government(YIG) is a YMCA affiliated organization that teaches teens in grades 6-12 civics and helps them apply it in the real world. YIG is a youth-run, youth-led model government with a legislative, executive, and judicial branch as well as Office of Legislative Affairs (lobbyists) and a press core. In February the state assembly is held where delegates go to the Florida State Capitol to present, debate, and “pass” the legislation they wrote themselves in the actual Senate and House chambers. Students that are involved in YIG learn life skills such as public speaking, the civics process, and involvement in our local and national government. Students are encouraged to use their critical thinking skills to analyze the actual government, see what adjustments can be made, and realize they can leave a legacy on our great state. Not only is YIG educational, but once students begin, they make lasting friendships and experience competition that keeps them coming back. Our club is based out of the Plant City YMCA.
