Did you know a piece in Fertile Ground connects directly to Mies van der Rohe?

Michael van Beuren studied under Mies at the Bauhaus in Germany. After the school closed under N**i pressure, van Beuren planned to join Mies in Chicago but instead found himself in Mexico. As curator Ana Elena Mallet explains, the country’s vibrant creative and design culture inspired him to stay and continue his career—with Mies’s blessing.

Today, a chair from van Beuren’s Danish Line is on view inside one of Mies’s most celebrated designs: Edith Farnsworth House.

How can tradition shape modern design?

At Edith Farnsworth House, we celebrate the women whose ideas have challenged conventions and shaped the built environment. In Fertile Ground: Crossroads of Design in Mid-Century Mexico, discover the work of Clara Porset, a pioneering designer who looked to Mexico’s material culture to create a distinctly modern design language.

One of Porset’s most well-known designs, Butaque, drew on a form with both pre-Columbian and Spanish influences. She studied its regional variations, structure, and use of materials, then reimagined its proportions and experimented with woven fibers to meet modern needs for comfort. Rather than treating tradition as something fixed in the past, Porset used it as a foundation for innovation.

The result? A design that connects modern living to Mexico’s history, climate, craftsmanship, and sense of place.

It's World Architecture Day.

Architecture shapes how we experience light, landscape, materials, and the spaces we share. At Edith Farnsworth House, Mies van der Rohe’s careful reduction of structure and materials creates an architecture that is both specific to its site and part of a larger modernist conversation that continues around the world.

As we celebrate 75 years of Farnsworth House, we’re looking not only at its place in architectural history, but at the ideas it continues to inspire—and the new perspectives that can emerge from it.
