Buckle up, this is going to be a long one.

Been a long road. Stressful. Full of ups and downs, and a constant uphill battle to achieve perfection. Perfection in every facet. And it’s so tough.. any machine shop owner knows what it’s like.

For the first time ever, we got brand new machines delivered to the shop. It’s always been new “to us” machines. We saved money, paid cash for used machines, and stayed away from debt. But this time, they’re BRAND NEW. We need new capability, new abilities and accuracies that were not achievable before. These machines are going to add capacity of course, but they change everything else. We have a 10+ year history with Mazak lathes, and a few days ago we received 2 brand new DN lynx lathes. It took a while to come to this decision, but I’m confident we made the right one.

One of those pictures shows my very first machine leaving the shop (it died 2 years ago and I couldn’t part ways with it..)
And one of our new DN’s sitting in the crate, together on the truck. It was surreal to see them two sitting next to each other. A metaphorical picture that shows the turning of a new era for us.. out with the old, in with the new. Literally lol.

We got a lot of challenges to overcome. We get better everyday. I’m so excited to see how these machines get us one step closer to a truly, perfected machine shop.

The last few years have changed things quite a bit. The shop is running out space quick! Everything is coming together. I really like our setup, and how we’ve created these little mantras around the shop. We put up those banners with our two favorites.. “what would space x say” and “everyday in here is the f*ckin Super Bowl”

We made a deception a while back that no matter what, and I mean NO MATTER WHAT, we weren’t going to send bad parts. Little things in machining always get by, like does that thread have to be that deep, or is +/- .0005 necessary on this feature.. whatever it is. We were guilty of making exceptions (and mistakes of course) too often. When we became truly committed to never sacrificing quality, the atmosphere in this place changed. I’ve always said our “end goal” was to make parts for space x. We want to help put things in space. And eventually when the guys would bring a problem to me, and ask if it was “ok” I would ask.. what would space x say? And then they had their answer.

The second one came from the TV show the bear. There’s a scene where a guy is learning the ins and outs of a 3 Michelin start restaurant, and what it takes to operate at that level. It’s an incredible episode. I wanted our shop to run just like that restaurant runs in the show. Perfectly..

In one scene a senior employee of the restaurant grills the new guy because he doesn’t believe in the fine details. And at the end of his rant, he tells him that “every day in here is the f*ckin Super Bowl”

That’s how I feel about this place. It’s the biggest game of the year in here, every single day. We might not be perfect, and always get every aspect of this company right, but with each mistake we get a little bit better. Closer and closer to perfection.
