On Wednesday, June 17, 2026, Mayor Adrian O. Mapp, the City of Plainfield, and community members gathered to celebrate the ribbon cutting of Just Thrift Tea, LLC at 137 North Avenue.

The grand opening marked an exciting addition to Plainfield's growing business community and highlighted the continued investment of local entrepreneurs in our city's future. Family, friends, customers, and supporters joined in welcoming this new small business and celebrating the hard work and dedication that made its opening possible.

Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy, creating jobs, generating investment, and contributing to the unique character of our neighborhoods. We are proud to support entrepreneurs who choose to invest in Plainfield and help strengthen our commercial corridors.

PUBLIC MEETING NOTICE

The City of Plainfield Planning Board will hold a Special Meeting on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at 7:00 PM in the City Hall Library, 515 Watchung Avenue.

The Board is scheduled to hear an application from BH West Front-Urban Renewal LLC for properties located along West Front Street, Plainfield Avenue, and Waynewood Park.

The application involves a proposed mixed-use redevelopment project that includes residential units, retail and office space, parking, tenant amenities, and related site improvements.

Public documents are available for inspection at the Division of Planning, City Hall, Second Floor, during regular business hours.

Families and residents of all ages are invited to learn simple, lifesaving water safety tips, including awareness of water risks, prevention strategies, emergency preparedness, and ways safety can help save lives. No registration is required, and all minors must be accompanied by an adult.

On Tuesday, June 16, 2025, Mayor Adrian O. Mapp joined community leaders, residents, and partners to celebrate the ribbon cutting of Family Promise of Union County's new location on Watchung Avenue in Plainfield.

The event brought together distinguished guests, including Lieutenant Governor Dr. Dale G. Caldwell, representatives from Senator Cory Booker's office, Union County Commissioner Rebecca Williams, Family Promise founder Karen Olson, and members of the Family Promise of Union County Board of Directors. Their presence reflected a shared commitment to supporting families and strengthening communities throughout Union County.

As officials, supporters, and board members looked on, Family Promise of Union County Executive Director Peter Jacob and retired Executive Director Geleen G. Donovan officially cut the ribbon, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the organization.

Family Promise of Union County continues to make a meaningful impact by helping families experiencing housing insecurity achieve stability and independence through housing assistance, support services, and community partnerships.

Residents, families, library supporters, and community leaders gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebration, exploring the newly renovated space while recognizing the library's continued role as a center for learning, discovery, and connection. The improvements will help ensure that the library remains a welcoming destination for readers, students, families, and lifelong learners for years to come.

On Saturday, June 13, 2026, residents, community leaders, advocates, and families came together for the March Together Against Gun Violence, demonstrating Plainfield's commitment to safer neighborhoods and stronger communities.

Participants marched from the Plainfield Performing Arts Center to Black Lives Matter Plaza, where a rally brought the community together in support of violence prevention, healing, and hope. Wearing orange and carrying messages of peace and unity, attendees stood in solidarity with individuals and families impacted by gun violence.

Thank you to Councilwoman Terri Briggs-Jones, Moms Demand Action, community partners, and all who participated in this important event. By raising awareness, supporting one another, and working together, we continue building a future where every resident can live, work, and thrive in a safe and vibrant community.

On Friday, June 12, 2026, the City of Plainfield proudly celebrated Juneteenth with our Freedom Fest at Black Lives Matter Plaza. Residents, families, community organizations, and visitors came together for an evening that honored freedom, culture, history, and community.

The celebration featured an inspiring spoken word performance, a dynamic Divine Nine Greek Organization stepping showcase, a powerful community choir performance, and a spirited line dance celebration that brought attendees of all ages together. Throughout the evening, music, fellowship, vendors, and community engagement highlighted the rich heritage and lasting contributions of African Americans to our city and nation.

Thank you to everyone who attended, performed, volunteered, and helped make this year's Juneteenth Freedom Fest a memorable success. Together, we celebrated the enduring spirit of freedom, reflected on our shared history, and strengthened the bonds that unite our community.
