Plainfield already has one EPA Superfund groundwater contamination site. PFAS was still being detected there in 2020.

Gallup's Quarry on Tarbox Road. 29 acres of illegal industrial waste dumping in the 1970s. EPA put it on the National Priorities List in 1989. The federal cleanup plan is "monitored natural attenuation" — which means there is no cleanup. The contamination just sits there. A biomass gasification plant already operates on top of that site.

Now SMART Technology Systems wants to build a SECOND gasification plant — a 1,800-ton-a-day waste-to-energy facility — on 81 acres off Route 12, in a residential neighborhood, in the same town.

One Superfund site is enough.

This is what happens when industrial waste reaches the groundwater. It has happened in Connecticut. It cannot be undone.

Plainfield gets its water from the ground. The state's own trout hatchery here pulls 1.29 billion gallons a year from the Quinebaug aquifer. Rural homes around the proposed SMART trash plant rely on private wells in the same groundwater.

When gasification plants pollute groundwater, the federal government has admitted it can't be cleaned up.

Waterloo, Iowa: EPA formally declared the contamination there a "Technical Impracticability Zone" — cleanup impossible.

Mason City, Iowa: 75 years after the plant stopped operating, contamination is still spreading.

SMART Technology Systems wants to process 1,800 tons of garbage a day on 81 acres here. The permits are filed.

The Plainfield trash plant is not a someday problem. SMART Technology Systems has already filed for its air permit with the state.

What it is: a waste-to-energy plant that would process 1,800 tons of garbage a day on 81 acres in a residential part of town — 100+ trucks daily, emissions over the neighborhoods, risk to local water.

A milestone worth celebrating.

Today, the Plainfield Democratic Town Committee reached more than 1,000 followers on Facebook. While that number is exciting, what matters most to us is the community behind it.

Thank you to everyone who follows our page, attends meetings, volunteers at events, helps register voters, supports local candidates, shares our posts, asks thoughtful questions, and stays engaged in the future of Plainfield and our state. Every conversation, every comment, every hour volunteered, and every act of civic participation helps strengthen our community.

Over the years, our committee has grown because of people who believe that local involvement matters. Whether you have been with us for years or just recently joined our page, your support, ideas, feedback, and participation help shape the work we do.

We are especially grateful to the many volunteers, committee members, candidates, elected officials, supporters, and community partners who have dedicated their time and energy to making a difference. None of this happens without you.

As we continue moving forward, we remain committed to keeping our community informed, encouraging civic engagement, supporting Democratic candidates and values, and providing a welcoming place for residents to get involved.

Picture Route 12 and Route 14 with more than 100 garbage trucks a day on them — every weekday, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

That's part of what SMART Technology Systems' proposed waste-to-energy plant brings to Plainfield. It would process 1,800 tons of trash a day on 81 acres in a residential zone. The trucks tear up roads we pay to maintain. The plant puts emissions over the neighborhoods around it.

Plainfield's Republican and Democratic town committees both signed a letter against it. This is not politics.

A waste plant this big can be stopped — a Connecticut town already did it.

First, what we're up against: SMART Technology Systems wants to process 1,800 tons of garbage a day on 81 acres in a residential part of Plainfield. Trucks, emissions, the works.

Killingly, right up the road, faced a 650-megawatt power plant. Residents organized, wrote the state, packed every hearing, and never let up. The plant was never built.
