Tolles Fire and EMS

Tolles Fire and EMS Our courses are designed to prepare students to meet requirements for Ohio Fire/EMS Certifications. The first year course is Introduction to Fire and EMS.

The Firefighting/EMS Program at Tolles is one program comprised of three different parts. The first part of the program is our Adult Firefighting Course which started in the early 1980’s. Our course meets and/or exceeds State and National certification requirements for Firefighter I & II. Students can expect a challenging classroom curriculum, combined with practical hands-on training. The next pa

rt of our program is our Adult EMT Courses which also started in the 1980’s. Similar to our fire program, this course meets and/or exceeds the state’s certification requirements for a professional EMT in Ohio. The program follows the state and national curriculum for EMT and offers a challenging classroom curriculum, combined with real-world hands-on training. The final part of our program is the HS Firefighting/EMS Courses at Tolles which started in 2006. It is a two-year program that provides the basics for Ohio Department of Emergency Medical Services Firefighter I and II and Emergency Medical Services Emergency Medical Technician. The second year is the State of Ohio certification courses in Firefighting and Emergency Medical Technician. Currently, the program is design to have up to 25 students in the junior class, and 25 students in the senior class. Additionally we work closely at the high school level with nearly 150 students in three other programs. There will be another 50-100 students annually in adult learning programs that will also be directly impacted. Additionally, we currently have several partnerships and collaborative training events with many organizations throughout the region. These organizations have conducted training at our location in the past, and have plans to continue to train at our facilities in the future. These organizations include Central Township Fire, Jefferson Township Fire, Jerome Township Fire, Norwich Township Fire, Pleasant Valley Fire, Madison County Sheriff’s Office, the Union County Sheriff’s Office, and others.

City Council proudly recognized four high school students who are heroes AND Hilliard lifeguards.

Council president Tina Cottone presented a proclamation to Dylan Shields, Luke Self, Logan Faulkner, and Seth French, students at Tolles Career & Technical Center, for their courageous and selfless actions following a semi-truck crash on I-270.

Luke and Dylan have served as Hilliard lifeguards since the summer, and Seth joined the City as a staff member this month.

These future Firefighter/EMTs applied their training to assist the injured driver and continued to support first responders with professionalism and care. Their swift response and calm leadership reflect the highest values of public service.

We commend these young men for their heroism and dedication to helping others. Their actions are a testament to the strength of our community and the power of preparation.

Saving lives starts here! 💓

Our Senior Only EMT students recently completed the American Heart Association - Ohio First Aid Course and the Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR & AED for Healthcare Providers Course—passing both written and hands-on tests! They also took the Stop the Bleed® course to learn how to control serious bleeding. After all that hard work, they earned a CPR Keychain Pocket Face Shield to keep their skills close at hand.

Already this year, our students have racked up three points of approved industry-recognized credentials in the Ohio CTE Law & Public Safety Career Field. Many have already used these skills to help people, both in and out of school! This is why we provide these courses early in the school year.

📸 Check out these future lifesavers in action!

Several of our Tolles Career & Technical Center HS Fire and EMS students proudly participated in the 2025 Columbus 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb at Fortress Obetz. This powerful event honors the firefighters, police officers, and EMS personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001. We are incredibly proud to share that our students were the top fundraising team for the fourth year in a row, raising an amazing $2,642 which is nearly 19% of the entire event total of $13,658!

A huge thank you goes out to everyone who donated, encouraged, and stood behind our students. Your generosity helped them succeed not only in the climb, but in carrying forward the legacy of service and sacrifice. It was an unforgettable experience for our students, and we look forward to honoring our heroes again in the years to come.

Thank you to everyone that supported our Tolles Career & Technical Center HS Fire and EMS Program students, and donated to a great cause. We had several students participate in the 2024 Columbus 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb event, which was held on Saturday, September 7th, 2024. From what we can tell, this year, as well as the previous two (2) years, our students were the top fundraising team for the event. This year our team collected an amazing $2803.61, which was just over 18% of the $15,366.11 event total to date. It was an amazing experience for our students, and one we hope to continue doing in the future. Here are some pictures from the day:

This evening, HS Fire and EMS Program student Max Golembiewski was recognized as the 2023-24 Tolles Career & Technical Center Senior Interview Contest winner, earning 1st Place. Each year, around four hundred (400) senior students compete in the annual contest. Twenty (20) program winners are selected out of all those senior students. After these twenty (20) students compete in the second round, the top eight (8) students are selected to move on to the third and final round. In the last twelve (12) years, our HS Fire and EMS Program has sent someone to the final round, or top 8, in 11 out of 12 times. In those 12 years, the Fire/EMS Program has now won five (5) times, which is 41.6% of the time, with 6 out of 8 remaining students all finishing in the top three, meaning we have placed in the top 3 10 out of 12 times. Our program expectation is that this trend continues each year, and Max Golembiewski did just that by winning 1st Place this year.

Max was also recognized this evening for placing 2nd in the SkillsUSA Ohio State Championships Firefighter Skills Competition. This competition evaluates the competitor’s preparation for firefighting careers through hands-on skill demonstrations and both written and oral presentations. Areas tested include safety; breathing apparatus; fire streams; ladders, ropes, knots, and hoses; fire control; ventilation; emergency medical care and rescue; and protecting fire cause evidence. Max placed 2nd in the State out of 26 competitors.

Tolles HS Fire and EMS students recently completed lessons related to different aspects of firefighter survival. One of the topics covered was Firefighter Down: CPR. If a firefighter experiences an emergency event on the scene of a fire, students are training to prevent, recognize, and respond. In the attached video, a group of Level 2 students practiced extricating a firefighter from their gear to provide the highest level of care possible.

Several students in the HS Fire and EMS Program at Tolles Career & Technical Center participated in the 2023 Columbus 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb at the Fortress Obetz entertainment and sports venue. Our students were the top fundraising team for the second year in a row, with an amazing total of $3,502.30 as of this post, which is almost 21% of the event total of $16,738.74 so far. These funds go to benefit the FDNY Counseling Services Unit (CSU), help to defray costs to send FDNY families to the Memorial Weekend, and assists funding other programs provided by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation to support the families of our nation’s fallen firefighters. Thank you to everyone who donated and helped support our students as they continue to honor and remember the firefighters, police, and EMS who selflessly gave their lives so that others might live on 9-11-2001. It was an amazing experience for our students, and an event we hope to continue doing in the future.
