This year, for the first time, there will be a seventh moment of silence.

At the ceremony marking twenty five years since September 11, 2001, the six moments the country knows will be observed. The two towers struck, the two towers fallen, the Pentagon, and Flight 93. Then, after the reading of the names, a seventh will be added for those who have died of 9/11 related illness. The 9/11 Memorial and Museum has said it will be a permanent part of the ceremony from now on.

It was added because the arithmetic finally demanded it. 2,977 people from 90 nations were killed that day, among them 441 first responders from more than thirty agencies. 343 FDNY members. 37 from the Port Authority Police Department. 23 from the NYPD.

In the years since, more than 400 FDNY members have died of World Trade Center related illness. More than died on the day itself.

Twenty five years is long enough that a generation now learns this as history. It is not history to the people still being buried from it.

Eighty one percent of private industry workers have access to paid holidays, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Which is another way of saying roughly one in five does not.

Labor Day did not arrive as a gift. The first one was September 5, 1882, in New York City. Congress made it a federal holiday on June 28, 1894, in the middle of the Pullman Strike.

The eight hour day took longer, and it did not arrive the way most people think. It was a demand for decades before Congress first wrote it into law, and even then only for interstate railroad workers, under the Adamson Act of 1916. The law most Americans actually work under today, the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, does not cap your hours at all. It requires time and a half after forty in a week.

None of that was inevitable. Someone argued for every piece of it.

Members of this association will be on duty today, the way they are on most days the rest of the country has off.

There is a persistent myth that asking someone directly whether they are thinking about su***de will put the idea in their head.

The research says the opposite. A review published in Psychological Medicine examined the available studies and found not one showing that asking about suicidal thoughts increased them. The authors concluded that acknowledging and talking about su***de may in fact reduce suicidal ideation.

September is National Su***de Prevention Month, and that finding is the most useful thing anyone can hand you this month, because it removes the reason most people stay quiet.

It matters in this line of work more than most. The CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has reported that law enforcement personnel and firefighters are more likely to die by su***de than in the line of duty.

That makes this a safety issue. This association treats safety issues the way it treats every other one. Out loud.

You do not need a certification to ask a colleague how they are actually doing. You need to ask, and then stay quiet long enough to get the real answer.

🐾 HELP SUPPORT EL DORADO COUNTY SHERIFF K-9s! 🐾

The El Dorado County Canine Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is raising funds to help offset the purchase of three new EDSO K-9s at $18,500 each — $55,500 total. Unlike many agencies, these K-9s are purchased by their handlers — not the agency. The Canine Association works to help offset these significant costs through donations and community support. The Association also covers routine veterinary care and medical expenses related to off-duty injuries for our K-9s, both active and retired.

110 years ago, the Marine Corps Reserve was created for a war the United States had not entered yet.

President Woodrow Wilson signed the Naval Appropriations Act on August 29, 1916. The logic was simple: if America was pulled into World War I, it would need trained Marines ready to move without months of lead time. Congress built the Reserve to guarantee that.

It worked. Reserve Marines went on to serve in every major American conflict since, from Belleau Wood to Iraq and Afghanistan, alongside disaster response, humanitarian missions, and community work like Toys for Tots.

Today it is the largest command in the Marine Corps, roughly 40,000 drilling Marines strong, made up of people balancing full civilian lives with full military readiness.

Members of this association do the same thing every week. We know exactly what that takes.

We are proud to share that several of our members were officially recognized on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives by Congressman Kevin Kiley during National Police Week!

This national recognition honored our members for their bravery and selflessness during a high-risk incident in Camino.

When faced with immediate danger and direct gunfire, these men didn't hesitate. They put their lives on the line to safeguard our community. When two of our members were shot, they stood together, pulled their wounded brothers to safety, administer life-saving medical care, and safely took the suspect into custody.

These are the dedicated men and women putting on the uniform for you every single day. They are your neighbors, your friends, your family, and the ones who run toward danger when help is needed most. Their courage under fire and unwavering commitment to one another reflect the true heart of your Sheriff’s Office.

Please join us in thanking them their service and commitment to keeping El Dorado County safe for all of our families.

Twenty minutes. That is roughly how long a kid spends walking to school and walking home again, and it is the riskiest part of their entire day.

NHTSA data shows more school-age pedestrians are killed between 6 and 8 in the morning and between 3 and 5 in the afternoon than during any other hours. Two narrow windows, at the exact times when the light is bad, drivers are rushed, and children are the smallest and hardest things on the road to see.

Here is what actually helps. Walk the route with them once before the first day so they know where to cross rather than deciding in the moment. Teach them to make eye contact with a driver before stepping off a curb, because a stopped car is not the same thing as a driver who has seen you. Bright colors on a backpack do more than people think in morning fog. And the phone goes in the pocket until they are through the door.

None of it takes long. All of it works.

Our members will be out on those routes when school starts back up, same as always.

The oldest military decoration still awarded in this country was created by hand, out of purple cloth, in 1782.

On August 7 of that year, George Washington issued general orders from his headquarters in Newburgh, New York establishing the Badge of Military Merit. It was described as the figure of a heart in purple cloth or silk, edged with narrow lace. Washington intended it to honor enlisted soldiers, at a time when Congress had forbidden him from granting promotions to recognize merit.

Only three men received it from Washington himself. Sergeant Elijah Churchill. Sergeant William Brown. Sergeant Daniel Bissell Jr.

Then it disappeared for 150 years, until 1932, when it was revived as the Purple Heart on the 200th anniversary of Washington's birth.

The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor estimates roughly 1.8 million have been awarded since. Every single one represents blood given in service to this country.

Today we honor every recipient and every family carrying that legacy.
