Happy Birthday, California! On September 9, 1850, California became the 31st state. This federal action for California statehood was part of the Compromise of 1850, a series of 5 bills that defined the issue of Slavery in the 1850 United States.

The debates over the bills are among the most famous in Congressional history, and the divisions devolved into fistfights and drawn guns on the floor of Congress.

For more specific details, browse Wikipedia for State of California and Compromise of 1850.
