REMINDER FOR VILLAGE PROPERTY OWNERS

Starting today through May 10th, residents who own property in the village are allowed to burn their yard waste which is typically prohibited. As a reminder though, you still need to contact Fire Warden Brad Keith to obtain a permit to burn in order to take advantage of this.

⚠️🔥 FIRE WEATHER WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT TODAY FROM 11 AM TO 7 PM 🔥⚠️

Very high fire danger conditions will exist today especially from late morning until early evening. This is due to increasing southerly winds gusting to 30 MPH which will allow temperatures to climb into the low to mid 70s and low relative humidities near 20%. This combination of temps, wind, and humidity along with rapidly drying fine dead fuels, will lead to conditions for fires to start and grow quickly, and become very hard to contain.

As always, please use caution when doing any open burning and if you refrain until we get a little bit of rain, that would be the best plan at this time. And remember a Permit to Burn is required at all times when there is no snow on the ground and those can be obtained from our Fire Warden Brad Keith.

Whenever Laura was on the other end of the radio for any of our calls, you automatically knew that everything you needed would be taken care of the way you asked for it to be.

The dispatching world lost a legend on April 21, 2026, when we lost Laura Moulton.

Laura spent more than 35 years of her life dispatching for the Vermont State Police and beyond, serving dozens of fire departments, rescue squads, game wardens, constables, DMV enforcement, liquor control, and more.
If you heard Laura’s voice on the radio, you knew the call you were responding to was going to be okay. Laura took pride in making sure all of her responders went home at the end of their shift. This often meant thinking outside the box, even if it didn’t make people happy.

If you ever worked with Laura, you realized it wasn’t always fun. She demanded perfection when it came to officer safety. This was a lesson that took time for dispatchers working with her to learn Once enlightenment was achieved, you became more than just a coworker to her, she became like family member, a mom, attended weddings and baby showers, and being there for her coworkers on their absolute worst days. She was instrumental in breaking the mental health stigma in the dispatch world and was a founding member of the peer support team in Vermont.

Laura loved the Patriots and Tom Brady to almost obnoxious levels. Like Brady, Laura was hands down the best at her craft. She worked in the “dark ages” of dispatch, when cards were punched and telephones were rotary, before E911. She worked in a single barracks, regional barracks, and eventually dispatched for half the state. Her knowledge of emergency services and resources is irreplaceable. Technology, responsibilities, and roles changed rapidly during those years; however, her commitment to taking care of her coworkers and responders never did. The State of Vermont has lost perhaps its foremost expert in dispatchers.

Laura’s legacy will live on. She trained dozens of dispatchers to her exceptional standard. If you listen carefully to dispatchers around Vermont and slightly across its borders, you can still hear her in their voices, especially on the big calls.

Finally!!!! We have reached that time of the year where unless you work the overnight shift, we are no longer driving to work in the dark and coming home in the dark.

With that being said, don't forget to set what remaining manual clocks you have left forward one hour tonight and check those batteries in your smoke and CO detectors. And as a reminder, it doesn't hurt to check the date on the back of the unit either. If the CO detector is more than 5 years old and the smoke detector is more than 10 years old from the date of manufacture, see about replacing it as its ability to alert when there is an issue is greatly reduced.

TRAVEL ADVISORY FOR THOSE HEADING INTO RUTLAND ON N MAIN ST

⚠️⚠️ 6:30AM UPDATE⚠️⚠️
DPW completed the repair at approximately 3AM this morning. Traffic has resumed in its normal fashion however use caution in the area due to the repair and the road currently not being paved.

⚠️⚠️ 3:00PM UPDATE⚠️⚠️
Unfortunately DPW is having to close the turning lane on N Main St that allows you to go east on Woodstock Ave. The detour to get back to Woodstock Ave will be Terrill St to East St. Southbound traffic on N Main St is still flowing normally. Northbound traffic is still proceeding through the intersection however is merging down to one lane prior to the Woodstock Ave/N Main St intersection. Once again, if you can avoid this area please do so, but if you have to go through this area, especially northbound, please use extreme caution and obey all lane closures.

⚠️⚠️ 2:30PM UPDATE⚠️⚠️
Woodstock Avenue heading westbound is now closed at both the Bellevue Ave intersection as well as the East St intersection due to the water main break at Woodstock and N Main. For those looking to travel north on North Main from Woodstock Ave, you will have to travel down Bellevue Ave to Temple St and pickup of N Main from there. For those looking to travel south on Main St, you will have to go down East St and take either E. Center St or E. Washington St to easily access southbound traffic on S Main St. Be advised that the righthand turn lane from N Main St to head east on Woodstock Ave may also have to be shut down depending on the area the needs to be excavated by DPW. If that does happen, we will update this post once again.

⚠️⚠️TRAFFIC ADVISORY⚠️⚠️

Please avoid the area of North Main St and Woodstock Ave. There is a water main break in the intersection that is going to significantly impact traffic that is heading northbound on N Main St as well as traffic that is attempting to head south off of Woodstock Ave. DPW is assembling crews to address the problem and we ask that you find alternate routes at this time, and we will update this post when the flow of traffic returns to normal.

As most of you are aware by now, our small, tightknit community was struck with an unimaginable tragedy for one of our local families. We extend our deepest condolences to Michele, Randy, Jack, as well as all of Ben's family and friends, and we ask that you please keep them in your thoughts during this extremely difficult time.

While the outcome is a far cry from what all of us had hoped and prayed for, we also would like to extend our sincere gratitude and appreciation to the City of Rutland Fire Department, Pittsford -VT First Response Squad, Regional Ambulance Service, Vermont State Police, Carrara's Services, Earle's Truck Repair, and the countless individuals who shared the original missing person bulletin from the State Police on social media as well as those who were out actively looking for him.
