AUGUST IS NATIONAL LIHEAP MONTH. For thousands of Berkshire County families, LIHEAP ( fuel assistance) is more than help with a heating bill. It is the difference between a safe, warm home and an impossible choice between heat, food, medicine, and other necessities.
Each year, Berkshire Community Action Council helps more than 8,000 local households through LIHEAP. Nearly 60 percent of the people we serve are older adults, many living on fixed incomes while heating costs continue to rise.
In a rural county with long, bitter winters, heating assistance is not a luxury. It is a lifeline. Protecting LIHEAP means protecting our neighbors, our older residents, our children, and the dignity of every family who simply wants to remain safe and warm in their own home.
LIHEAP matters to Berkshire County because no one should face a cold winter alone.
