This morning at approximately 09:50, we responded to a structure fire in town. Upon arrival, heavy smoke was visible on the second floor. Firefighters conducted a rapid attack that quickly extinguished the fire, followed by an extensive overhaul operation.
Two dogs and two cats were inside the building. Three of the animals have been accounted for; one cat remains missing. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Update from Maine State Fire Marshal

FMO Investigating Pittsfield Fire

On Sunday, August 23, 2026, at approximately 5:44 am, the Pittsfield Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 133 Hussey Road in Pittsfield. The fire was reported by a neighbor who observed heavy black smoke coming from the residence. When firefighters arrived, a significant portion of the home was heavily involved in fire. Crews worked to extinguish the fire and were able to protect a nearby barn and other surrounding property from the fire. The residence was unoccupied at the time and no injuries were reported. The home, which was undergoing renovations, sustained extensive fire damage.

The Pittsfield Fire Department requested assistance from the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office to determine the origin and cause of the fire. Investigators responded to the scene and determined the fire originated inside the residence. The cause remains under investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Please make sure that any last-minute injuries for the parade, co****le game, kickball, crafters, vendors, or sponsors get a hold of us so we can make this a year to remember as we celebrate the 250th year of our beautiful country!

The members of the Pittsfield Fire Department are deeply saddened by the tragic explosion at Robbins Lumber in Searsmont on May 15, 2026.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and fellow firefighters of the brother who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Our thoughts are with them during this incredibly difficult time.
We are also keeping all those injured — both firefighters and civilians — in our prayers, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.
To the Searsmont Fire Department, Thorndike Fire Department, and all mutual aid crews who responded: thank you for your courage and dedication in the face of danger. This incident is a solemn reminder of the risks our firefighters face every day to protect our communities.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Searsmont community, the Robbins Lumber family and employees, and everyone affected by this devastating event.
