The parade this morning is still on! If you are in the parade, we are meeting at the Puritan parking lot on Main St. at 10:00 am. The parade starts at 11:00am. We will not be doing the flag retirement ceremony or food after the parade at Manson Park. However, there will be food after the parade at the Elks free for Veterans and a minimal cost to the public. Come join us as we remember those who gave all so that we have the privilege to march in the rain!

Whether serving in the Army National Guard or the Air National Guard, the nature of service involves a concept some call being a โ€œcitizen soldier.โ€ They are also known as a โ€œcitizen airmanโ€ which means that Guard members have joined the military with its responsibilities and privileges. They also maintain a civilian job and a life outside the active duty military world.

National Guard members have been labeled โ€œweekend warriorsโ€ or โ€œpart-timeโ€ soldiers and airmen. The role of the Guard should not be taken for granted in the larger scheme of homeland security, global military operations, or the war on terror.

The end of the first Operation Desert Storm led to a serious reconsideration of how Guard and Reserve forces could be used to augment active duty missions. This brought the reshaping of the work and deployment of these part-time forces.

Being a member of the National Guard means being ready to put civilian careers on hold to train, deploy, and serve. The role that โ€œweekend warriorsโ€ play in the full-time Army and Air Force work done around the world is a crucial part of the War Departmentโ€™s (previously known as the Department of Defense) planning for such operations.

Since the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, more than 650,000 National Guard members have been called on to serve at home and abroad.

The birthday of the National Guard may surprise you. The National Guard official site lists the official date as Dec. 13, 1636.

That is no misprint. The date the Massachusetts colonial legislature authorized a consolidation of the colonyโ€™s militias into three regiments was indeed on Dec. 13, 1636.

This date is used as part of a War Department tradition of using the date on the legislation officially recognizing an active or reserve componentโ€™s existence.

WAA, the organization, evolved out of one familyโ€™s efforts to honor veterans. The Worcester family owns a memorial wreath business and has been making wreath donations to Arlington National Cemetery for many years. A photograph featuring some of those wreaths went viral circa 2005.

One of the unintended results of that viral image that featured Worcester donated wreaths covered in snow was that donations began coming in to support the donations of the wreaths.

According to the WAA official site, at first those donations were sent back to the givers โ€œbecause there was no mechanism in place for the family to accept the donations at that time.โ€ Yet the floodgates of donations had been opened and there were thousands of requests to help out.

In 2007, Wreaths Across America had been approved as a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization. Since then they have raised the awareness of veterans and their sacrifices. They also work to assist other groups in fundraising such as Civil Air Patrol, Scouts, 4-H, local VFW chapters and other groups.

2012 marked the year when the one millionth wreath was laid at Arlington National Cemetery. In 2016, the 25th anniversary of the first wreaths donated pre-WAA by the Worcester Family and Worcester Wreath Company.
