Christian Center Pittsfield

Christian Center Pittsfield Helping the community for over a century The Christian Center is the oldest nonprofit human service organization in the Berkshires.

Founded in 1892 by parishioners of the First Methodist Church. The Christian Center was first known as the Epworth Mission. Following the Great Depression the Epworth Mission developed numerous programs to meet the social needs of the day and hired a full-time director. The Pittsfield Area Council of Churches underwrote the cost of these activities.

📜 "The people are informed that... all slaves are free."

On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and issued General Order No. 3, announcing the enforcement of emancipation more than two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

These words marked a historic turning point:

"This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property, between former masters and slaves..."

General Order No. 3 became the foundation of what we now celebrate as Juneteenth — a day of remembrance, liberation, resilience, and hope.

As we prepare for the NAACP Berkshire County Branch Juneteenth Celebration on June 21, we invite our community to reflect on the meaning of freedom and the ongoing pursuit of equality. Through music, culture, community, and a multigenerational reading of Frederick Douglass's powerful speech "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?", we honor those who fought for freedom and those who continue the work today.

We’re seeing an urgent and growing need in our community—and we need your help 💙

Right now, we are experiencing a critical shortage of MEN'S spring and summer clothing and shoes, and the number of people coming to us for support continues to rise each day.

We are asking for donations of gently used items like t-shirts, shorts, jeans, sneakers, and light jackets - athletic clothing is especially appreciated!. These essentials are in high demand and going quickly.

Donations can be dropped off at The Center Monday through Thursday from 9am to 2pm, Friday from 9am to 1pm, or by appointment (call 413-443-2828). If you’ve been meaning to clean out your closet, now is the time—your items can make an immediate difference for someone in need.

Thank you for stepping up for our community when it matters most. We truly couldn’t do this without you.
