This WWII jacket belonged to First Lieutenant Alfred "Fred" Gill. While serving in WWII, Fred met Joan, a WAAF pilot serving in the Royal Air Force. Joan and Fred would eventually marry, have four children, and spend 51 years together.

Joan recalled accidentally burning the jacket while ironing, which is why Fred had to sew a patch near the bottom of the jacket. Fred also added one of Joan's buttons to his uniform, a detail Joan didn't notice until the jacket was donated to the museum. This past Sunday, June 14th, Joan Gill turned 104 years old! Happy Birthday, Joan!

Keep an eye out for the next look at our collection!

On June 11th, Soldiers & Sailors was honored to accept the donation of a Civil War Medal of Honor to our collection.

Serving in an elite unit during the Civil War known as Sheridan’s Scouts, twenty-year-old Pittsburgh native Archibald Rowand, along with a few other scouts, infiltrated enemy lines, gathering valuable reconnaissance and capturing 2 generals. For that deed, and other heroic escapades, Rowand received a Medal of Honor by the direct recommendation of General Phil Sheridan.

Archibald Rowand practiced law in Pittsburgh after the war, became Clerk of Courts, and passed away in 1913. His great-grandson Scott Rowand graciously donated Archibald’s Medal of Honor, which will be displayed with seven other medals in Soldiers & Sailors’ Hall of Valor. Scott also donated a collection of handwritten letters, several swords, and other artifacts related to his great-grandfather. Soldiers & Sailors humbly thanks the Rowand family for their generous donation to our museum.
