Just Harvest addresses the root causes of hunger in Allegheny County with a focus on economic justice through public policy, increasing food access, and building community power. Yet 1 in 7 of our neighbors here in Allegheny County, including 1 in 5 children, face food insecurity and hunger. Along with our partner organizations, Just Harvest addresses the root causes of hunger, in Allegheny County

and beyond, by:

-- advocating to make government more responsive to the needs of the vulnerable through public policies that strengthen basic living standards, enhance child nutrition, and improve supports for working families, as well as through fair taxes and budgets;

-- helping people access critical social safety net programs to lift them out of poverty and put food on the table;

-- strengthening community-based solutions to healthy food access in underserved communities; and

-- empowering people in poverty to take political action and be part of government decision-making.

United Way of Southwestern PA's Community Food Solutions Mini Grant applications are now open! Apply by Monday, June 29th, 2026.

Community Food Solutions is focused on increasing food access in our neighborhoods and communities throughout Allegheny County. Grants are funded up to $7,500 to small-scale, grassroots organizations and groups that are working on addressing food insecurity in the region.

We’re Hiring 2026 Fresh Access On-Site Coordinators!

Love being outdoors and being part of a team? Work at a local farmers market and connect with vendors, shoppers, and the Pittsburgh community!

The On-Site Market Coordinator assists with the operations of the Just Harvest Fresh Access Program to accept electronic transactions at Farmers Markets, May through November, including direct contact with customers, relationships with market officials and farmers/vendors, community outreach about the project, and back-office record keeping and data collection.

Locations and times vary by market, including afternoons/evenings and weekend mornings. At this time, we are hiring for multiple positions at a variety of market locations, operating through October / November. We have open markets available on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Please specify your availability in your email.

Be sure to make it to the Bloomfield Farmers Market this season! 🌞🍎

Open now until November 21st, swing by on a Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm to find delicious local goods. And, thanks to the City of Pittsburgh's Food Justice Fund, SNAP match will be available while funding lasts!

Food Bucks, a program implemented by Just Harvest and the Food Trust – provides SNAP shoppers $2 for every $5 spent to get even more delicious fruits and veggies. Food Justice Fund SNAP match tokens will pair with Food Bucks coupons to bring shoppers a dollar for dollar SNAP match at markets within the City of Pittsburgh.

Allegheny County Health Department has proposed Paid Parental Leave (Article XXIV) – which would require a minimum of 18 weeks leave to parents who have been employees for at least 30 days.

A public comment period is now open. Take this opportunity to voice your support by submitting a comment by 11:59 PM on June 16th, or join the upcoming hearing on June 2nd (Register to speak).

In the summer of 2025, the federal government made several changes to SNAP. We are collecting stories of people who receive SNAP benefits to make sure elected officials can learn the experiences of people in their districts – so they can make SNAP better for everyone.

Farmers Markets are here! And this week, the Downtown Farmers Market had its first market of the season. Be sure to stop by on a Thursday from 10 AM - 2 PM.

Located at the newly renovated Market Square, the Downtown Market will be open this season until September 24th. Thanks to the City of Pittsburgh's Food Justice Fund, SNAP match will be available while funding lasts!

The House recently passed a Farm Bill that fails to reverse the deeply damaging $187 billion in SNAP cuts from H.R.1, as well as other harmful changes that will further weaken the program.

Thank you to Chris Deluzio and Rep. Summer Lee for voting no on a Farm Bill that fails to protect families here in Pennsylvania, and all across the country.

SNAP serves as the number one defense against hunger. In 2024, 2 million Pennsylvania residents, or 1 in 7 people relied on SNAP, with almost 58% of participants in families with children (Center on Budget and Policy Priorities).

But the fight isn't over. As this bill moves to the Senate, our senators must stand up for the 2 million Pennsylvanians who depend on SNAP.
