With the recent snow event followed by subzero temperatures most of this week, a few reminders for our residents to help ensure the safety and wellbeing of all.

Our public works crews have been working tirelessly around the clock for days now to keep our roadways clear and to ensure the safest driving conditions possible. It is a violation of borough ordinance to deposit snow into the roadway. This can create a significant safety hazard for motorists as well.

Residents are responsible for clearing the sidewalk in front of their property within 24hrs of the end of any accumulating snow or ice.

Be a good neighbor! Check on the elderly and those with disabilities or handicaps that may be impacted more significantly during inclement weather and the days that follow.

Lastly, don't forget PA Libre's Law! It is unlawful (and cruel!) to leave a dog tethered more than 30 minutes when temperatures are below 32 degrees. The colder the temperatures, the shorter the period of time they should be left outside. A shelter must also be provided which protects from the elements. With the inclement weather and extremely cold temperatures, please remember to be mindful and considerate of your furry four-legged companion!

PA Libre’s Law states that dogs cannot be tethered outside longer than 30 mins when temperatures fall below 32 degrees - the colder the temperature, the shorter period of time they should be left. They must also have shelter that protects them from the elements.

Residents should not hesitate to call 911 to report exigent cases of animal neglect.

This year's Stuff-A-Store and Blue Santa events were yet another profound success!

The Stuff-A-Store event was founded many years ago by the late ACPD Det. Jimmy Svetic (retired) in cooperation with the Western PA Police Athletic League (WPPAL) and has steadily grown with each holiday season. After Jimmy's passing, his wife Gloria chose to continue the tradition in his honor, and so many local families in need truly benefit every Christmas from her ongoing commitment and dedication.

Chief Akerley and his fiancée Wendy, Mayor Paul Gamrat, councilperson Deb Casini-Klein and members of the Wilkins-Churchill Rotary spent the morning alongside the big man himself - SANTA, who distributed thousands of new toys to hundreds of local police officers in attendance to take back to their respective communities and provide to families in need this holiday season. The Rotary also donated $1,000 to the WPPAL to help ensure this amazing event continues on for many more years to come!

The Blue Santa event celebrated its 6th year with a turnout bigger than ever! More than 2,000+ new toys were distributed to hundreds of local families who attended.

Blue Santa was initially created by a collaboration between Swissvale Police Department and Toys for Pittsburgh Tykes which is owned/operated by Javid, the proprietor of Jaden's Catering and Banquets in Monroeville. Much like Stuff-A-Store, this event only continues to grow with each passing holiday season.

Blue Santa now involves officers from Swissvale, Churchill, Wilkins Twp, Forest Hills and Braddock Hills Police Departments. As always, Mayor Gamrat was also in attendance as were several volunteers from Toys for Pittsburgh Tykes. Chief Akerley's family has also participated every year of the event as does several high school friends of his kids - all who volunteer their time to such a worthy cause.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Donna Perry. Donna was heavily involved in the community and worked in the Borough for many years, ending her career as the Borough Manager. Our thoughts and prayers are with Donna’s family during this difficult time.

**CORRECTED INFORMATION 11/12/25 - the PA Game Commission DOES NOT conduct coyote hunts, a deer culling or any other wildlife hunting or trapping**

Their agency can, at a property owner's request, assist in facilitating hunts or trapping on their private property by connecting them with hunters, trappers and/or wildlife management services in the area.

Coyotes can often times become problematic in our area, particularly this time of year. In recent weeks, some residents have reported coyote sightings in or near their back yards.

Coyotes are predatory animals and though typically scared of and avoidant of humans, pose a significant threat to family pets. They are also listed as one of the top carriers of the rabies virus.

**Residents should make no attempts of their own to dispatch a coyote with a firearm as it is both prohibited by PA Gaming Laws in residential areas as well as can pose a significant danger to your neighbors. Call 9-1-1 if a coyote is spotted and poses an immediate threat**

It's already that time of year once again for our toy collection to begin in preparation for the annual ‘Stuff-A-Store’ event! New, unwrapped toy donations can be made now thru December 2nd, and a collection bin has been placed in the lobby of the borough building. Donations can be made during regular business hours. Toys for any age group are accepted, with an emphasis on the 9 – 18-year-old demographic. Please, no toy guns or other weapons (to include Nerf guns), and no video games. This year’s toy distribution and holiday celebration event will be held on Sunday, December 14th at 9a at Monroeville Mall and is open to the public.
