In 2008, manufacturers of automatically darkening eyeglass lenses faced a kind of “glass ceiling.” A team from Transitions Lenses used PSC’s corporate affiliates program to get time on the center’s Rachel supercomputer, helping them produce the first photochromic lenses made of high-impact plastic.

"[We] have a server in the lab, but [it] can only run very small setup experiments. Because of this parallelization requirement, I feel like for this line of research, it would be super challenging if we didn’t have a large computing center server [like Bridges-2 available].”

Black holes are often depicted as destructive sci-fi hazards, but they are integral to the formation of galaxies like our own. In 2005, scientists at Carnegie Mellon University used the Cray XT3 to reenvision the role of black holes in the evolution of the universe.

We are proud to announce that a $5 million NSF grant will enable PSC, with partners Hewlett Packard Enterprise , Rigetti Computing, and the University of Pittsburgh, to construct TangleLab: a hybrid quantum-classical computer.

Unlike classical computers, which calculate with zeroes and ones, quantum processing units employ the laws of quantum mechanics to compute in terms of quantum superposition and entanglement, manipulating states that are partly zero and partly one. Scientists expect that this ability to, in a sense, “calculate between the lines,” will make such devices superior to classical computers at solving certain problems in areas like chemistry, cryptography, and optimization tasks.

PSC’s Paola Buitrago bas been named Co-PI on GEM-AI, a project to use AI to identify geologic and biological clues that could indicate the presence of minerals essential for advanced manufacturing in technology, aerospace, energy and defense.
