Sometimes preparing for what’s next starts with experiences that feel pretty ordinary. Going shopping and learning to make choices. Preparing a meal. Trying something new outdoors. Learning to fish. Hiking a trail. Creating something with your own hands. Working alongside others and figuring things out as you go.

At Abraxas Youth Center, these everyday experiences become opportunities for something bigger. Youth are learning how to make decisions, solve problems, communicate, work as a team and become more independent; all while discovering the confidence that comes from realizing, “I can do this.”

The activity may be fun, but the lessons are real. Each new experience builds practical skills, confidence and a greater sense of what they’re capable of.

Because preparing for life beyond Abraxas isn’t one big lesson. It’s hundreds of small ones, learned by doing, growing and discovering what you can do for yourself.

Potential is powerful. Give it the right tools, guidance, and opportunity and anything's possible.

Abraxas Academy recently added a wood-cutting sawmill to its cabinetry and carpentry program, made possible through a grant from our PACTT affiliation.

But before the first board could ever be cut, there was work to do. Students worked alongside their carpentry instructor to set up and level the heavy steel tracks, learning that even an eighth of an inch could make the difference between a straight board and an uneven one. Measure. Level. Adjust. Try again. It became an exercise in patience, precision, teamwork, and problem-solving.

Then came the first log—an eight-foot walnut trunk. As the blade moved through the rough exterior, it revealed the dark grain hidden underneath. For the students who had spent weeks preparing for that moment, the first finished slab represented much more than a piece of lumber. They could see the result of their work.

Now, lumber from local fallen trees can become cutting boards, benches, raised garden beds, and other future projects—giving students the opportunity to follow the process from raw material to finished product while building practical skills along the way.

Sometimes potential is just waiting for the right tools, and the opportunity to discover what’s underneath.

"I’ve been at Abraxas for two months, and in that short time, I feel like I’ve grown a lot. I have hope for my future.

I feel like my therapist, my mom, and I are a team. My therapist helps me understand how I can make positive changes, and my mom supports me through the process. My mom and younger siblings are my inspiration to change. I want to keep making myself and my life better, stay out of trouble and take care of myself and my family.

Recently, I won an art contest and my painting will be entered into a contest at a national juvenile justice conference. When I was asked to choose a photo of something meaningful to me, I chose my artwork. I created a similar piece in the past for a friend who was struggling, and it meant a lot to them. I decided to create something like it again, hoping it might mean something to someone else, too."

This is Angel. We had the opportunity to celebrate him at Southwood Interventions’ 37th Annual Alumni, Staff, and Patient Picnic this past week. His story is one worth sharing.

He’s celebrating 77 years of life, 29 years of sobriety, and a recovery journey that continues to inspire others.

Angel remains an active part of the Southwood Interventions Alumni community, serving as a meeting chair, staying connected, and giving back to others who are walking their own path in recovery.

🎉 Happy 77th Birthday, Angel, and congratulations on 29 years of recovery! Thank you for showing us the power of perseverance, connection, and giving back.
