Before the apps. Before the traffic alerts. Before the detour.

Oakland has always been the kind of place people show up for.

Some things don't change. Oakland draws a crowd.

You've probably grabbed coffee at Red Hawk. Did you know there's a whole coworking space on the second floor?

Welcome to Avenu Workspaces, a coworking and innovation hub right in the heart of Oakland, home to over 40 teams and 150 members. Private offices, podcast studios, a nap room, phone booths, conference rooms, even a pitch book terminal. This is where Oakland's next companies are actually getting built.

And September 14 to 18, we're hosting events right here as part of StartUP PGH, Pittsburgh's five-day citywide innovation week. Come see it for yourself.

Long before it reopened this month, this bridge was already holding Oakland together.

Panther Hollow Bridge went up in 1895 and 1896. Engineer Henry B. Rust designed a three hinged steel arch spanning 620 feet, standing 120 feet above the hollow. It was part of Edward Bigelow's push to turn Schenley Park into the green heart of the city.

In 1897 four bronze panthers by sculptor Giuseppe Moretti took their places on the corners, cast by the Gorham Manufacturing Company in Rhode Island. Only two were ready for the July 4th dedication that year. The other two joined later.

This photo catches Panther Hollow Lake not long after, boathouse and all, with the bridge rising in the background.

130 years later, the bridge is still doing its job. It closed in October 2024 for steel truss repairs and reopened this month, reconnecting Oakland and Squirrel Hill after a nearly two year wait.

Some things in Oakland were built to last.
