The Department of Public Safety took another important step toward enhancing security measures and protecting the community at events throughout the City of Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh Emergency Management & Homeland Security (OEMHS) acquired the Meridian Barriers through a $130,000 grant from the federal Port Security Grant Program.

The portable, steel, and ADA-accessible barriers are designed to secure perimeters from unauthorized or accidental vehicle entry.

Recently, OEMHS, the Office of Film and Event Management, and the Pittsburgh Department of Public Works participated in a training to learn how to properly deploy the barriers at events.

This investment strengthens Pittsburgh's ability to keep residents and visitors safe while ensuring the city is prepared to respond to evolving security needs.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001.

We remember the 2,977 lives lost that day and those lost in the years that followed.

We remember and honor the service of those that responded to the scenes at Ground Zero in New York, at the Pentagon in Virginia, and in a field in Stonycreek Township, Pennsylvania. We remember those who were there that day and those who served in the days, weeks and years after.

We remember the thousands of stories of immense personal courage that day, stories of stranger helping stranger, and stories of those who gave all to help others.

We remember, and we will never forget.

⚠️ WEATHER SAFETY REMINDER ⚠️

Many roads across Allegheny County are experiencing flooding, downed trees and downed wires.

🚗 Avoid traveling unless necessary and never drive through flooded roadways. Turn around, don’t drown.

🚦 If a traffic light is without power, treat the intersection as a stop sign in every direction.

Stay safe and stay weather aware.

Significant rainfall from the severe thunderstorm has created flooding conditions and brought down trees and power lines in several areas of the city.

Public Safety is standing up all of its assets in the event of high water rescues if needed.

Motorists please avoid flooded roads - it only takes 12 inches of rushing water to carry away cars, double that amount, 24 inches, for trucks and SUVs.

It is NEVER safe to walk or drive into flood waters. Please heed all barriers, they are there for your safety.

Turn around, don't drown!

UPDATE: We've added the Mt. Washington HAL Center to the list of Cooling Centers open today and tomorrow -- from 8AM to 7PM.

As forecasted temperatures are expected to exceed 90° this week, we are activating Cooling Centers at five Healthy Active Living (Senior) Centers from Tuesday, September 1st throughThursday, September 3rd. These centers will be open from 8AM to 7PM. ☀️🌡️

Reminder: Keep storm drains clear🌧️ If you can safely do so, move leaves and debris away from storm drains to help keep water flowing and reduce the risk of neighborhood flooding. Stay safe!
