The mission of The Environmental Charter School is to educate each student to high academic learning standards using a themed curriculum that will foster knowledge, love of and respect for the environment and the will to preserve it for future generations The Environmental Charter School is a tuition free K-10 charter school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The school began with grades K-3 in September

2008 and grew to include fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh grades by the 2012/2013 school year. The school fills a gap in local education programs as the first environmentally themed public school in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. ECS combines the academic rigor of the best public schools with a multi-disciplinary, "out-the-door" learning approach rooted in real world problems that build active, engaged, and empathetic citizens. We think differently. We approach school differently. We believe that it is our responsibility to build an active, engaged, and thoughtful citizenry – not just graduate students. We strongly commit to building systems thinkers, and use the platform of environment and ecology explore complexity, diverse perspectives, and various disciplinary ways to engage or explore a problem. Trout Release Day!
As part of their year-long study of watersheds, our fifth graders raise Rainbow Trout through the PA Trout in the Classroom program. Students learn about water quality and the trout life cycle while caring for the fish as they grow from eggs to fingerlings. Students test the water weekly to monitor the chemical balance, feed the fish and help clean the tank. In May the Trout Team traveled to our approved stream to release 101 fingerlings into the wild!

🐾 Our 5th Grade Kindness Crew recently completed a meaningful community service project in partnership with to support cats and dogs in need!

Our students took the lead by creating presentations and visiting classrooms to encourage donations from their school community. They also helped prepare adoption folders and made cozy blankets for rescue animals awaiting their forever homes.

To wrap up the project, students visited the Paws Across Pittsburgh warehouse to deliver the collected donations and lend a helping hand organizing food, toys, and blankets. Through their hard work, compassion, and teamwork, they made a real difference for local animals and the people who care for them.

Thank you to Paws Across Pittsburgh for this meaningful partnership and experience for our students.

As part of their Capstone, a group of 8th grade students worked with our food services team to create a ‘compliant’ school meal that they then served for lunch! The group had to consider nutritional metrics as well as cost. They developed a chicken, bacon wrap, veggie wrap that was a hit among their fellow students!

A little rain (all 3 mornings!) couldn’t stop us from celebrating Walk, Bike and Roll to School days at ECS high, middle and intermediate schools this year!
We celebrated our District’s commitment to active and sustainable transportation with raffles, smoothies and more! We are so proud of all of our students and families who show their commitment to sustainable modes of transportation every day (including roller skates)!
Huge thanks to BikeECS for coordinating these events and all of the incredible biking programming we are so lucky to have at ECS.

Our 9th graders had an incredible Aqua Lab Adventure at at Moraine State Park last week!

Watch this great video from their trip - they learned how to sample for microplastics, explore the hidden impacts of pollution, and build a deeper, more meaningful connection to the waterways around them. Through paddleboarding, hands-on science, and outdoor exploration, students become both researchers and stewards of their local environment.

Led by the Watersmith Guild, Aqua Lab Adventures blends environmental education, adventure, and storytelling to empower the next generation of changemakers—one waterway at a time.
