Penn Hills VFD Water Rescue Response Team Penn Hills Water Rescue Response Team is comprised of multiple members from the PHVFD St.222, 223, 227.

These individuals are have completed numerous hours of mandated Water Rescue Training by the PA Fish & Boat Commission.

🥽 Today is National Dam Safety Awareness Day. Low-head dams are “drowning machines” and should be avoided. The hydraulic action caused by falling water over the dam creates a circulation of current that will continually suck you back towards the dam. Once caught in the current, the chances of survival are very low even if you are wearing a life jacket.

On Saturday & Sunday, eight (8) members from 227 and two (2) members from 222 along with members from Baldwin VFC, Murrysville Medic 1, South Strabane FD and S.Brownsville VFC participated in the PA Fish & Boat Commission’s “Emergency Boat Operations Rescue” course in Oil City, PA. Students spent classroom and practical hands-on training in boat selection, recommended equipment, boat-handling, moving-water tactics, and boat-rescue techniques. Good job to all that attended. On Saturday ten (10) members of the PHWRT and surrounding local VFD’s continued their training by participating in the PA Fish & Boat Commissions “Advanced Line Rescue Systems”. Team members completed a 400 meter unaided swim, learned various in-water victim rescue techniques, and additional self rescue techniques, along with setting up complex rope rescue devices. Unfortunately due to low water levels at the testing site, the practical portion of this class was unable to be completed. A new practical day has already been scheduled. Special thank you to the Penn Hills School District for the use of the pool. This training is invaluable and access to this asset right in our back yard is great!!!
