Today we honor the birthday of ✨ Asa Philip Randolph ✨ (1889–1979). His fight for justice, labor rights, and equality continues to inspire us all. Celebrate his legacy by learning more and taking action.

Randolph was a pivotal labor and civil rights leader who founded the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) in 1925, the first successful Black trade union. He also founded the A. Philip Randolph Institute (APRI) in 1965, along with the Messenger magazine, the Negro American Labor Council, and the League for Nonviolent Civil Disobedience Against Military Segregation.

✨ APR ✨ made the statement "In this period of power politics, nothing counts but pressure, more pressure, and still more pressure, through the tactic and strategy of broad, organized, aggressive mass action."

✊🏾 This pressure tactic was effective and President Franklin D. Roosevelt met with Randolph in June 1941, issued the Executive Order 8802 which banned discriminatory hiring practices in defense industries and created the Fair Employment Practices Committee (FEPC)

💬 Plan, act, and inspire. Randolph’s vision for tomorrow starts with us today. How are you showing up?

✨APR ✨ often utilized this phrase to emphasize the need for organization amongst African American workers.

The full famous quote is: "At the banquet table of nature, there are no reserved seats. You get what you can take, and you keep what you can hold. If you can't take anything, you won't get anything, and if you can't hold anything, you won't keep anything. And you can't take anything without organization"

Economic and social fairness weren’t just ideals, they were goals Randolph worked tirelessly for.
