STARTS WITH COMMUNITY!

Today, the HACP was proud to join residents, neighbors, & community partners at Bedford Dwellings to celebrate with our Homeownership Fair.

The free event included community resources from multiple local organizations, including the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh, Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh, Huntington National Bank, the Pittsburgh Land Bank, Catapult Greater Pittsburgh, Coldwell Banker Real Estate LLC, Realtors of America, Keller Williams Exclusive- Pittsburgh, WesBanco, City of Bridges Community Land Trust, & Colonial Title LLC.

Shout out to HACP Carpenters Everett Hanna and Marshon Fisher for building our community wishing well that was decorated by the kids!

Our dollhouse raffle was courtesy of Lynlott Miniatures Dollhouse Junction in Aspinwall.

Rae Ann Driscoll, program coordinator with the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh, said the fair was a lovely event.

“We’ve had a lot of interaction. There’s a lot of intrigue surrounding homeownership and how we can help people,” she said.

Renee MacDougall, owner of Colonial Title LLC, said her company has helped close on about 50 homes in the last year with the HACP & partnering agencies.

“It’s an incredible thing to see,” she added. “I love seeing the opportunities they are giving to people. This program really works.”

Lea Etta Rhodes, program manager & HUD-certified counselor with Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh, said the fair featured a lot of great resources. The Urban League helps community members with workshops, credit counseling, down payment & closing cost assistance in partnership with the HACP & the ACHA.

“I think these events are important to give the community knowledge of what resources are out there. Half the people I talked to said they weren’t aware of the resources available to them.”

Strong communities are built through collaboration, and we are grateful to the organizations and partners who joined us in supporting opportunities that help families build wealth, achieve stability, and establish roots.

Thank you to everyone who came out and continues to invest in the future of the City of Pittsburgh. Together, we are creating stronger communities and expanding pathways to homeownership.

A message from the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office on Elder Abuse Awareness Month:

June is globally recognized as , which, for some, is a reminder of the significant impact that crimes against older adults can have on any community.

For the Senior Justice Team at the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office, it’s a year-round mission aimed at protecting those who cannot protect themselves.

This year’s theme, “Making Elder Abuse Prevention Work,” could not be more fitting. Our approach to protection is prevention.

When an older person is a victim of a crime, it can seriously impact every aspect of their lives, including physical and mental health, finances and their very sense of security.

Our goal is to protect older adults from experiencing these tragic losses by providing them with the tools & resources that will keep them safe from fraud, scams and abuse.

Through connection, we are able to engage, educate and empower the seniors of Allegheny County. This is demonstrated by the efforts of our Senior Justice Advocates, who actively participate and present at
senior events throughout the community.

Hosting events such as our most recent Senior Justice & Wellness Fest at the Pittsburgh Shrine Center emphasizes the importance of in-person interactions to build more meaningful connections. In the new age of technology, we’ve also adapted our messaging, such as Fraud Squad Alerts, to connect with seniors wherever they are, whether in-person, at home or online.

Today, I’m proud to reflect on how far this initiative has come through shared connection. Thank you to those who have joined us on this mission to raise awareness for abuse that threatens the well-being and safety of our older adults every day.

We were thrilled to welcome public housing officials from across the country, including reps from the
U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, at our Caster D. Binion EnVision Center in the Hill District this afternoon as part of the National Community Development Association Conference.

HACP staff shared success stories regarding our Choice Neighborhoods Initiatives grant in Bedford, STEM education and workforce development aboard our two CyberBus mobile education units (which were a big hit!), and the work our Development and Modernization and Community Affairs departments are doing to further our mission of being a place to live & a path to launch for all residents.

Thank you to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Mid-Atlantic Region, the City of Pittsburgh, Mayor Corey O'Connor, the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh, and the National Community Development Association for coordinating today's visit.

The HACP staff is always excited to highlight our innovative initiatives and investments that will help shape the future of affordable housing across the city and beyond.
