Nestled behind Lawrenceville’s bustling business district, Allegheny Cemetery serves as the final resting place for two dozen American Revolutionary War patriots.

The Pittsburgh chapter of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution on Sept. 27 will honor them with a ceremony that will include the unveiling of a new historical marker from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation.

Join the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Allegheny Cemetery for a special America 250 — Revolutionary War Pomeroy Patriot Marker Dedication.

This solemn ceremony will honor twenty-four documented Patriots of the American Revolution who rest within these historic grounds. The program will include a color guard, music by the Aquinas Academy of Pittsburgh Choir, a ceremonial roll call and bell toll for each Patriot, remarks from Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O’Connor and other distinguished guests, a keynote address by Colonel William P. Boswell, USAF Ret., and the formal unveiling and dedication of the Pomeroy Patriot Marker. Scouting America, Laurel Highlands Council, will also be helping with the service.

Please join us as we remember their service, honor their sacrifice, and preserve their legacy for future generations.

Lieutenant Colonel Commandant Josiah Harmar
(Biography from the Army Historical Foundation)

Josiah Harmar was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on November 10, 1753. When he was 18, he was appointed as captain in the 1st Pennsylvania Battalion. In October 1776, he entered the Continental Army as a captain in the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment. He became a lieutenant colonel in 1777 and was a brevet colonel from September to November 1783.

In 1784, he was appointed as lieutenant colonel
commandant of the 1st American Regiment, and he served as a senior officer in the United States Army from 1784 to 1791. He was brevetted brigadier general in 1787. In 1790, the Miami Indian villages defeated his punitive campaign along the Maumee River. In 1791, he was exonerated for the expedition's failure.

Retiring from active service in 1792, Harmar returned to Pennsylvania, where he served as adjutant general from 1793 to 1799. He died in Philadelphia on August 20, 1813.

Flag of the Commander in Chief’s Guard

This flag is traditionally associated with General George Washington’s Commander in Chief’s Guard, an elite unit established in 1776 to protect the Commander in Chief, secure headquarters, and serve as a ceremonial honor guard. The Guard was composed of carefully selected soldiers drawn from regiments representing the various states, chosen for their discipline, character, and military ability. Although entrusted with Washington’s personal security, its members also participated in military campaigns alongside the Continental Army.

The flag features a white field with a central allegorical figure of Liberty dressed in light blue and holding a matching pennant. An American eagle with a white head and yellow beak stands prominently above a Union shield displaying a blue chief over red and white stripes. Additional details include a blue military coat with white facings, white waistcoat and breeches, brown boots with black half-gaiters, a sword and crossbelt, a green landscape, and a cocked hat adorned with blue and white feathers. The flag is finished with a yellow fringe.

A Unique WW II Veteran

PA State Chancellor Colonel Bill Boswell and Pittsburgh Chapter Treasurer John Morgan shown with D-Day Veteran Warren Goss at a reception for him at the Pittsburgh-based Veterans Breakfast Club USA on August 1. They represented the Pennsylvania Society: Sons of the American Revolution in extending congratulations to him.

Warren will be 102 years old in February. At 19 he was a member of the 531st Special Brigade Engineer Shore Regiment, whose job was to remove obstacles embedded in the Normandy Beaches by Rommel’s Army. He landed on Utah Beach at 6:30 am on June 6, 1944, just prior to the main landings and his job as a rifleman was to protect the engineers. He went on to fight across France, participate in the Battle of the Bulge, and enter Germany in 1945.

Among his many adventures was being hidden for two days from German troops in the attic of a farmhouse by the 16-year old daughter of the farm’s owner. He still visits her children and grandchildren when he attends annual D-Day celebrations as a guest of the US government. Warren holds the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and the French Legion of Honor. He is one of the very few living D-Day veterans.

He spoke of growing up during the Depression in Glenshaw near Pittsburgh. Before going to school in the morning, he fed and watered the family’s (father, mother, grandparents, four sisters and two brothers) chickens, delivered newspapers at a penny for each four deliveries, and delivered milk for the local dairy. He said he never got to class until the Pledge of Allegiance. He enlisted prior to graduation and didn’t receive his High School diploma (honorary) until 2006.
