Did you know that there is a crypt underneath the United States Naval Academy Chapel dedicated to a revolutionary war patriot?

Beneath the magnificent Chapel in Annapolis rests the Crypt of John Paul Jones, one of the most celebrated naval heroes of the American Revolution and a founding father of the U.S. Navy.

Dedicated in 1913, the crypt is a fitting tribute to the man who famously declared, “I have not yet begun to fight!” The awe-inspiring 21-ton marble sarcophagus is supported by bronze dolphins and adorned with cast bronze sea plants and the names of Jones’s historic ships, symbolizing his enduring legacy at sea.

One of the most iconic images of the American Revolution is The Spirit of ’76, painted by Archibald MacNeal Willard in 1875 to commemorate the nation’s centennial. The painting depicts three Revolutionary-era patriots—a fifer, a drummer, and a flag bearer—marching resolutely through the smoke of battle. Though one is wounded and another appears advanced in age, they continue forward, symbolizing the determination, sacrifice, and unity that carried the American cause through its darkest hours. The tattered flag they carry reminds us that the freedoms we enjoy today were won at a great cost.

As America prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary through initiatives such as America250 and America250PA, The Spirit of ’76 serves as a powerful reminder that our nation’s story is not merely about events of the past, but about the enduring ideals of liberty, service, and civic responsibility. The same spirit that inspired those Revolutionary patriots continues to challenge each generation to preserve our freedoms, honor the sacrifices of those who came before us, and contribute to the ongoing American experiment in self-government. As we remember the past 250 years, the painting invites us to reflect not only on where we have been as a nation, but also on the role each of us plays in shaping America’s next 250 years.

Listen to remarks by Chapter President Jason S. Miller from the South Hills Memorial Day Parade as he honors the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation’s freedom. This year’s tribute carried special significance as part of the America250 commemoration, marking the approaching 250th anniversary of American independence.

In his address, Jason reflected on the sacrifices of our Revolutionary War ancestors and underscored the vital mission of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution: preserving the legacy of the patriots who secured our liberty and ensuring their stories continue to inspire future generations.

Princeton University (then called the College of New Jersey) was strongly supportive of the Patriot cause. Its president, John Witherspoon, was the only active college president to sign the United States Declaration of Independence.

The area was also the site of the Battle of Princeton, a major victory for George Washington shortly after the crossing of the Delaware and the Battle of Trenton. The victory helped revive American morale and demonstrated that the Continental Army could defeat British regulars in battle.

During the war, Nassau Hall (the main college building) was occupied by both British and American troops and was damaged by cannon fire. In 1783, the Continental Congress even met in Nassau Hall, making Princeton the nation’s capital for several months.
