For 15+ years, Josie White has led an initiative to deliver meals to Pittsburgh Fire, EMS, and Police stations on September 11 to thank first responders for their service.

The initiative began from deeply personal roots. On September 11, 2001, Josie lived and worked just outside Manhattan. Fifteen people from her neighborhood lost their lives on that tragic day. When Josie later moved back home to Pittsburgh, she brought with her a profound appreciation for first responders who run toward danger to protect others. The following September 11, she delivered a single tray of lasagna to the four firefighters at her brother’s fire station. That small gesture has since grown into a massive community effort, feeding more than 2,000 first responders across the Pittsburgh area.

Today, while delivering food to Fire Station 8, Josie was presented with a proclamation and a flag from the Mayor’s Office and Bureau of Fire leadership.

“On this September 11, 2026, the City of Pittsburgh is grateful to Josie White for reminding our first responders that they are seen and valued, and that their heroism is never forgotten,” the proclamation read. “The City of Pittsburgh proudly recognizes Josie White for creating a lasting tradition of gratitude and service for the first responders who serve our communities.”

Thank you, Josie and team, for your dedication to feeding and honoring Pittsburgh's first responders!

Today, the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police observes the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001.

On that tragic day, thousands of innocent lives were lost, including 343 members of the FDNY/EMS and 23 members of the NYPD who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of others.

Twenty-five years later, we remember, we honor, and we will never forget.
