The ’30s, ’40s, and ’50s were a time of racial segregation and limited work opportunities for women—especially Black women. Some professions like journalism and comics were heavily dominated by men, while the majority of women remained homemakers.
The JB will celebrate Women’s International Day by learning about the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The event will focus on Jackie Ormes and how she confronted issues like racism and pollution through strong and independent heroines in her comic strips.
