🗣 TOMORROW: Don't forget about the District 9 Community Safety & Wellness Family Fun Day

Join Councilman Khari Mosley, The Hear Foundation, and community partners for the District 9 Community Safety & Wellness Family Fun Day on Saturday, June 27, from 1:00–6:00 PM on Broad Street in East Liberty.

Created in response to recent safety concerns, disruptive behavior, and other challenges facing businesses and neighbors in the East Liberty Business District, the event will celebrate the launch of the District 9 Street Team — a new initiative designed to support local businesses, connect with youth and families, de-escalate challenges, and help create a safer, more welcoming neighborhood.

The afternoon will include a live DJ, vendors, giveaways, free food, activities, resources, and special remarks from Councilman Mosley and city officials. Community members are invited to come meet the District 9 Street Team and connect with neighbors, families, business owners, and organizations working together to support a safer, stronger East Liberty.

Walnut Capital eyes new apartments for Bakery Square expansion:

The new residential building would sit adjacent to Trader Joe’s, nestled between Penn Avenue and the Martin Luther King Jr. East Busway.

The area is part of a broader, 14-acre expansion of Bakery Square supported by a city-led zoning revision last summer. Though Walnut Capital originally planned to use the additional acreage to develop up to 1.5 million square feet of office space, representatives from the company hinted at their uncertainty surrounding those plans earlier this year. The proposal shared on Tuesday would mark the first development to take place within the expansion.

When we talk about housing, the conversation often focuses on affordable housing and market-rate housing. But there is another part of the housing picture that deserves more attention: the missing middle.

For some, “missing middle” refers to housing types like duplexes, triplexes, cottage courts, and small apartment buildings. For others, it refers to the shortage of homes for middle-income households—people who earn too much to qualify for traditional affordable housing but not enough to afford what is being built at market rate.

This gap affects the everyday workers, families, and neighbors who help make a community feel like home.

In our latest spotlight, we speak with Nathan Wildfire, Co-Founder and CEO of the Missing Middle Housing Fund and former ELDI employee, about why this issue matters and how communities can think differently about building more attainable housing.

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, remembrance, and resilience. It is also a reminder that freedom has always been connected to access—to safe homes, stable neighborhoods and the ability to build a future.

For generations, discriminatory housing policies limited where Black families could live, buy homes, access credit, and build equity. Today, the effects are still visible in the Black-white homeownership gap.

Nationally, the Black homeownership rate was 44.7% in 2023, compared with 72.4% for white households, according to the National Association of Realtors. In Pittsburgh, a recent LendingTree analysis cited by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette found that the metro area has a 40.7% Black homeownership rate, ranking 30th among the 50 largest U.S. metro areas.

At ELDI, we have worked in East Liberty to create more homeownership opportunities as part of our larger housing strategy, including affordable ownership options for groups historically excluded from building equity through housing.

That work includes Enright Court, where ELDI began purchasing and rehabbing homes, supported residents in forming a Neighborhood Improvement District, and helped longtime renters move toward homeownership. It also extends into Larimer and through our spin-offs, including Catapult Greater Pittsburgh, Rising Tide Partners, and Main + Elm Development Company.

Homeownership alone will not close the Black-white wealth gap. But with the right support, more ownership opportunities can help families stay rooted, build equity, and share in the value their neighborhoods create.

This Juneteenth, we’re reflecting on homeownership as one part of the work toward racial equity—and on the investments needed to help more families build stability, generational wealth, and economic justice.

🏗 Construction update 🏗

The team at Berna Construction continues to push ahead on 157 Mayflower Street in Larimer. 👏

Part of our Federal Home Loan Bank Affordable Homeownership project, this home is one of eight being transformed into affordable, for-sale opportunities.

Two homes will be reserved for buyers earning up to 50% of Area Median Income (AMI), and six for those earning up to 80%.

When we first acquired 157 Mayflower, it needed a full gut rehab. Swipe to the end to see where it started. 👀
