🏗 Construction update 🏗

The team at Berna Construction continues to push ahead on 157 Mayflower Street in Larimer. 👏

Part of our Federal Home Loan Bank Affordable Homeownership project, this home is one of eight being transformed into affordable, for-sale opportunities.

Two homes will be reserved for buyers earning up to 50% of Area Median Income (AMI), and six for those earning up to 80%.

When we first acquired 157 Mayflower, it needed a full gut rehab. Swipe to the end to see where it started. đź‘€

Check out this shot of Penn Avenue in 1960 by Charles “Teenie” Harris, the legendary photojournalist who documented Black life in Pittsburgh during the mid-20th century.

The photo is part of the Carnegie Museum of Art's collection of Teenie's work.

1960 was a pivotal time in East Liberty's history.

Until around 1958, East Liberty was a booming regional business district. But at that time, faced with the first commercial vacancy in decades, increasing vehicular congestion, lack of parking, and competition from the suburbs, East Liberty's business leaders began to call for change.

While founded on the desire to maintain East Liberty's strength, that change became one of the nation's largest urban renewal projects, and ultimately brought about the demise of the once-vibrant community.

A new (ish) East Liberty coffee shop was featured by NEXTpittsburgh:

Have you visited Spot of Coffee yet? It's tucked into a small street a block or so from the new Giant Eagle Market District on Penn Avenue (6015 Stevenson Place).

These Pittsburgh coffee shops opened within the last 18 months. We tried them all. Here's where to get your next jolt of caffeine.
