Ross and West View first responders are pleased to announce our 3rd annual Exceptional Citizens Expo! The Exceptional Citizens Expo will be held at the Ross Township Department of Public Works, where our exceptional citizens of all ages will have the opportunity to meet our community public safety workers- EMTs and paramedics, firefighters, crossing guards, police officers, public works employees and community service coordinators. There will be opportunities to explore the firetrucks, ambulances, police cars, and even our construction vehicles. Service Coordinators and other helping agencies from Allegheny County will also be present to educate attendees on resources available in the community.

We are excited to offer a sensory friendly hour from 12:00-1:00pm. We want all our visitors who need a quieter environment to enjoy the event without lights, sirens, horns, or loud equipment. Volunteers and staff will be there to assist our Exceptional Citizens, caregivers, and families.

Today, we mourn the loss of retired police officer Matthew T. Remaly — a respected officer, mentor, Marine, friend, and unforgettable personality.

Before serving his community in law enforcement, Matt proudly served his country as a United States Marine. He carried that same sense of discipline, dedication, and quiet strength throughout his career as a police officer.

Matt was known for his sharp wit and calm tact in handling even the most difficult situations. Younger officers looked to him not only for guidance, but for the kind of wisdom that can only come from years of experience, hard work, and genuine care for the profession. He carried a strong work ethic throughout his career and set an example that many will continue to follow.

Outside of the badge, Matt was just as legendary for his love of pizza and, above all else, his beloved basset hounds — who undoubtedly held the biggest place in his heart.

His humor, loyalty, mentorship, and friendship will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him. Rest easy, Matt. Your watch is over, but your impact will never be forgotten.

Come to our community information session on Monday, June 8th, 6pm at the township building.

Our traffic officers will be there with Ross Township Parks and Recreation to provide information and answer questions.

We are sad to announce that today is Jordan Sager’s last day with the Ross Police Department. For nearly three years, he has been an integral part of our team, and we have all benefited from his knowledge, wisdom, strong work ethic, and steady presence.

Jordan built the Social Services Unit from the ground up, transforming an idea and lessons learned from other programs into something truly impactful. His work with our officers and community members led to countless positive outcomes for those in need. He made the unit his own, leading it with excellence, compassion, and dedication. His commitment to both the unit and the people it serves has been unmatched.

You will be greatly missed, and we are deeply grateful for the lasting impact you have made on our department and the community we serve. Best wishes on your future endeavors!

Last evening, the Bethel Park Police Department responded to a very unfortunate, but preventable, accident in the Boxer Heights neighborhood involving a juvenile operating an e-bicycle.

Based on our investigation, the juvenile, along with a friend operating an e-moto, was traveling at a high rate of speed and disregarding traffic laws. As both approached an intersection, they failed to stop at a stop sign. The juvenile on the e-bike entered the intersection and struck the side of a vehicle that had the right-of-way and no stop sign. The juvenile was transported by medics to an area hospital for (thankfully) minor injuries. The vehicle involved sustained significant damage.

Parents need to understand what these devices are capable of and ensure their children are using them responsibly and legally. Operators must be 16 years of age or older if they are riding outside of private property. Not only can parents and guardians be cited for permitting underage children to ride these devices, but they may also be held civilly liable for any damage or injuries caused as a result of reckless or unlawful operation.

Even if they are old enough to ride, operators still must obey traffic control devices, signs, and signals. These are also citable offenses.

Attached are information sheets from PennDOT regarding classification of mopeds, motor-driven cycles, motorcycles, electric scooters, motorized pedalcycles, motor scooters, segways, e-bikes and bicycles. Also attached is a link to the Township ordinances relating to the restrictions on operating these types of vehicles in Township parks.

E-bikes (electric dirt bikes) without operable pedals, weighing more than 100lbs, and/or with a motor rated greater than 750 watts, with the ability to travel greater than 20mph by motor power, can not be legally operated on public roadways in Pennsylvania or in Ross Township Parks.

The parents and/or guardians of juveniles who are permitted to operate these types of vehicles in violation of Pennsylvania law can also be held accountable for these violations under the PA vehicle code Title 75 Section 1575.
