The second design workshop for the Brushton Station ETOD study is just around the corner

What is ETOD, you ask?

At its core, ETOD integrates housing, retail, jobs, and public spaces around public transit to make it easier for people to access daily needs without relying on a car. Here at City Planning, we prioritize community voices and input to guide future development to ensure we meet the needs of Pittsburgh residents--and the Brushton Station study is a perfect example of how it's done.

THANK YOU to everyone who helped move PGH2050 forward during the April community meetings 📣 Your input is vital in shaping and refining future land use maps and the draft plan that our team continues to push towards the finish line.

The next city-wide engagements will take place in September 2026 where we'll have one of the last opportunities for the public to weigh in.

Today, City Council passed the Stewardship Package Legislation that will create even more ways for residents, community groups, and nonprofit partners to transform City-owned vacant lots, parks, and greenways into vibrant community spaces.

Built through engagement with residents across 40+ neighborhoods, this is another step toward creating stronger, more connected communities across Pittsburgh

📣Exciting progress continues at the New Granada Square in the Hill District📣

In the 1930s, Louis A. S. Bellinger was one of only 60 Black architects in the United States. As one of Pittsburgh's first prominent African American architects—and a former assistant architect for the City—Bellinger left a lasting legacy right on Centre Avenue

The restoration of this historic building will soon bring new life to a space that has stood at the center of the neighborhood's cultural legacy for generations. As a social hall and music venue, it welcomed legendary figures including Lena Horne, Duke Ellington, James Brown, and Malcolm X

When complete, New Granada Square will feature affordable artist-focused housing, retail and restaurant space, offices, community gathering spaces, and a restored cultural venue designed to celebrate and honor the rich history and creative spirit of the Hill District

As an anchor project along the Hill's historic commercial corridor, New Granada Square is a powerful example of what's possible when preservation, culture, and community investment come together

Last week, City Planning Director Ivette Mongalo-Winston joined a panel of public and private sector leaders alongside Mayor Corey O'Connor and Deputy Director of Economic Development Mary McKinney Flaherty, to discuss the opportunities and challenges shaping Pittsburgh's next phase of growth.

As Pittsburgh continues to adapt to changing economic conditions and new development opportunities, strategic planning remains essential to ensuring growth is equitable, sustainable, and aligned with community priorities.

🚭 A major step forward for public health in Pittsburgh🚭

City Council has approved new zoning regulations for v**e shops, smoke shops, CBD retailers, and similar businesses designed to better protect Pittsburgh youth while promoting healthier neighborhoods

The legislation establishes location requirements near schools, prevents the overconcentration of these businesses, limits overnight operating hours, and requires products to be secured behind counters or in locked displays

This milestone reflects the collaborative efforts of City Council, City Planning, community stakeholders, and the Planning Commission, who helped shape and advance the legislation toward the finish line while demonstrating how planning and zoning can be effective tools in addressing public health challenges and creating more equitable, resilient communities

🏘️ Big changes to housing policy are moving forward in Pittsburgh

This week, the Housing Needs Assessment Bill (2025-1545) received positive recommendation from the Planning Commission and now heads back to City Council for a public hearing and final vote

✅ Expanding the Affordable Housing Bonus option wherever multi-unit residential development is permitted (except downtown)

✅ Citywide regulations for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) on lots with residential, community center, or religious assembly uses

✅ Parking reform that replaces 1950s-era parking regulations while encouraging multimodal transportation options

These updates are designed to help create more housing options, support affordability, and better align development with Pittsburgh’s future needs
