No Cop Money PA is relieved to learn that George Floyd's murderer, Derek Chauvin, has been found guilty on all three charges brought against him. Though this verdict is a step forward, we urge all those who want to see true, sustainable, meaningful racial justice in the United States to think critically about what this verdict means and what it does and does not accomplish. This verdict does not mean that police violence is under control. This verdict does not mean the criminal legal system achieves real justice for Black communities. This verdict does not bring George Floyd back to life.
The prosecution would love to have us believe that Chauvin is an outlier, a “bad apple” cop; but there are no bad apples and good apples, only an intentionally racist system of white supremacist power and control concealed under the guise of "safety." What is safe about being murdered in the streets? What is safe about using military-style equipment to disperse protests over a Black man being murdered by an agent of the state?
Our current systems of policing and "criminal justice" are not worth saving. There are too many Chauvins walking free while their victims lie 6 feet underground. There is no reforming a system that murders, abuses, and lies with impunity.
Now more than ever, we remain resolute in our commitment to abolish the police and carceral states. The fact that the whole world had to wait with baited breath to see if a jury would convict a murderer -- a murderer whose state-sanctioned actions were captured on video for the whole world to see -- is outrageous. True justice will never be handed down by a jury, but by ensuring that communities are put in control of their own safety. Today and every day we believe that and that we can and must abolish the police.
