Borough of Etna Etna is a small, bustling community along the Allegheny River with industrial firms, family-owned businesses, and a burgeoning artist community.

Etna is a small bustling community covering one square mile along the banks of the Allegheny River. Centrally located, Etna is just 10 minutes (non-rush hour) from downtown Pittsburgh. Once a mill town, over the past twenty years, Etna has re-emerged as a residential community with a highly diversified business base and a thriving artist community. Recognized by the Allegheny League of Municipalities as a 2017 Banner Community!

Streetscape IV's Green Streets project (block from High Street to Maplewood Street) construction will begin in earnest of June 8. Beginning on June 8, Maplewood Street (the lowest section) from Butler Street to Spring Alley which is the road connecting High and Maplewood Streets where the food bank entrance is, will be closed to traffic and remain closed until June 30th. This closure is for the installation of the underground storage tank and "rough" restoration (permanent repairs will occur later in the project). Subsequent phases of this project which include new sidewalk installation, decorative grate installation, curbs, pavement restoration and tree plantings in that section of Butler Street, will begin around June 15th and run through mid to late August. Project is expected to be complete by early September.

On April 30, I had the opportunity to photograph “A Taste of Etna,” a community event organized through Etna Heart & Soul focused on the future of the borough.

What made the evening especially interesting wasn’t just the event itself, but the conversations happening between the tables. Residents reflected on longtime businesses, familiar places, and what they hope Etna continues to become moving forward.

The night blended documentary-style event coverage, environmental storytelling, and portraits created for a larger community memory book project connected to the event.
