⚠️ Town of Pittsboro Alerts Public to Phishing Scam ⚠️

PITTSBORO, NC – The Town of Pittsboro is alerting the public to a phishing scam that is targeting individuals who have worked with the Development Services Department.

Customers who have submitted rezoning and major subdivision applications have reported receiving fraudulent emails requesting wire transfers for permit application fees. These messages are not legitimate and were not sent by the Town of Pittsboro. The Pittsboro Police Department was notified of the scam on Monday, August 24, 2026, and is actively investigating.

What the public needs to know:
• The only valid way to pay Town of Pittsboro permit fees, other than paying in person at Town Hall, is through the official OpenGov permitting portal: https://chathamcountync.portal.opengov.com/categories/1085
• Individuals who are unsure about a payment request should verify the request by logging into their OpenGov account through the portal above or by contacting Development Services staff through the Town's website directory: https://www.pittsboronc.gov/m/directory
• Do not send payment, click links, or open attachments contained in suspicious or unexpected emails.
• Anyone who receives one of these fraudulent messages should report it immediately to the Pittsboro Police Department and should not provide payment or personal information.

The Town of Pittsboro takes the security of its residents, businesses, and applicants seriously and encourages anyone with questions about permit fees or payment requests to contact the Development Services Department directly.

First day of school tomorrow!

Tuesday the 25th is Chatham County School’s first day back, and we want to help y’all be prepared as you make your way through town. Expect heavy traffic in the mornings and afternoon (7-9am and 2-4pm). Heaviest traffic will be on Sanford rd. by Horton Middle, as well as NC902/87 and West Street near Pittsboro Elementary.

If you are dropping off or picking up students at Pittsboro Elementary in The Carpool Lane, line up using the streets shown in orange (Farrell St and Pittsboro Elementary School Rd). Cars can line up on these streets all the way from school to the highways, but traffic on Highway NC902/87 and US 64 Business West MUST REMAIN FREE FLOWING! If the Carpool line has filled up Pittsboro Elementary School Rd or Farrell Street and you are in the yellow section, DO NOT STOP and block traffic. You must move on and either use the other carpool street, or circle back around when the Carpool line has moved up.

If you are trying to get to the school or somewhere else on Pittsboro Elementary School Rd. for any other reason do not use the streets designated for The Carpool. These streets will be lined up with vehicles and you will not be able to get around them. To get to the school you will need to come in from the Sanford rd./US15 side of Pittsboro Elementary School Rd. Parents who want to walk their kids into school will park in the gravel lot in front of school circled in red.

Our Officers will be out helping The Carpool and traffic flow safely.

🚨 SCAM ALERT 🚨

The Pittsboro Police Department has seen an increase in scams this week, particularly the “Jury Duty Scam.” Please read the information below to help protect yourself and your loved ones.

🎯 HOW THE SCAM WORKS:
Scammers pose as court officials, law enforcement officers, or government employees. They may contact victims by phone, text message, or email claiming the person failed to appear for jury duty.

The scammer may:
▪️ Threaten you with arrest or jail time
▪️ Claim there is a warrant for your arrest
▪️ Demand immediate payment to avoid legal consequences
▪️ Request payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or payment apps
▪️ Use spoofed caller IDs to make the call appear legitimate

⚠️ REMEMBER:
Official court notices and jury summons are sent through FIRST-CLASS MAIL — not by phone call, text, or email. Court officials will NEVER demand payment over the phone.

👥 WHO IS TARGETED?
While anyone can become a victim, scammers often target elderly individuals and those unfamiliar with court procedures.

✅ WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:
• Hang up immediately if you receive a suspicious call
• Never provide personal or financial information
• Do not send money or gift cards
• Verify any claims by contacting your local court directly using a trusted phone number
• Report suspicious activity to local law enforcement

On July 20 and 30, 2026, we responded to Lowes Home Improvement in reference to tools being stolen from customer’s vehicles while the customers were inside shopping. There are 2 suspect vehicles. The first is a dark in color GMC Envoy with a small yellow and green window sticker on the back hatch. The vehicle had a fictitious plate on it. The second suspect vehicle is believed to be a mid-2000s Ford Econoline van with a large dent on the side panel behind the driver’s side door, light gray rims, and an extended trailer hitch. If any recognizes either vehicle, please contact the Pittsboro Police Department at 919-542-3200.

🌧️ Park Closure Notice 🌧️

Due to the significant rainfall this past weekend, Knight Farm Community Park is currently closed while our Parks team completes necessary maintenance.

The safety of our visitors is our top priority. We want to make sure the playgrounds, trails, and other park amenities are safe before reopening.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to get the park ready for everyone to enjoy again.

Oh hey there, hi how are you Pittsboro. As everyone is aware, it’s storm season. And with that comes a new wave of scams. Our partners with the North Carolina Department of Insurance have provided us, to give to you, some tips on avoiding possible roofing scams. That’s right roofing scams, however these tips will work for most repair work on your home. If you or someone you know suspect fraud, call 919-807-6840 to report it directly to the North Carolina Department of Insurance.

🚨 WEATHER ALERT FOR PITTSBORO 🚨
A Flood Watch remains in effect for our area through tonight. Multiple rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected today, which may lead to flash flooding, hazardous travel conditions, and rising creeks and rivers. A few storms could also produce strong wind gusts and an isolated tornado.
Please use caution if you must travel. Never drive through flooded roadways—Turn Around, Don't Drown.
If you encounter:

🌳 Trees blocking the roadway
Please report them to the Chatham County Communications Center at 919-542-2911 so they can notify the appropriate crews and help keep our community safe.
