A Message from the American Conference on Diversity:

For many years The American Conference on Diversity (ACOD) was one of very few voices speaking about social justice, diversity and inclusion. Now it seems that there are many more.

Early on, the American Conference on Diversity was dedicated to building just and inclusive schools, workplaces, and communities through awareness, education, and advocacy. The nonprofit organization was founded in 1948 as the National Conference of Christians and Jews. Its programs, services, and initiatives were among the most important work focused on creating a more inclusive society. We always felt our work was the unfinished business of living in a highly diverse nation: educating and empowering our next generation of leaders, enhancing our workplaces, and helping to create inclusive communities.

However, as time has passed, our society has become more aware of these inequities. Others including colleges and universities, corporations, government agencies and entrepreneurial organizations have taken up the work. Therefore, the Board of the American Conference on Diversity felt that it was time to turn the work over to those who were bringing new commitment to the cause.

We want to thank those individuals and foundations who have donated to support this wonderful work over the years. Thanks also to those who have served on the Board and committees, those who have volunteered to run our programs, and those corporations, school systems, and municipalities who have used our services over the years.

The struggles of keeping the organization going during the pandemic and during a time of financial constraints took a toll. As a result, we will be closing operations on August 31, 2023. There are active conversations going on regarding transitioning key programs. We will keep you informed as to developments.

Only a few more days until the 22nd Annual American Conference on Diversity “Diversity Issues in Higher Education” virtual conference!

Please join this enlightening online discussion on Friday, Nov. 18 (10 am – 1 pm ET), to engage with DEI experts, gain insight, and learn best practices for increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion for people with disabilities.

As we straddle virtual and in-person environments in today’s hybrid world, we find working and learning remotely resolves one set of challenges for people with disabilities, but introduces another set of barriers as we strive for increased diversity, accessibility, equity, and inclusion on college campuses. That’s why the theme of our 2022 conference is “Best Practices for Increasing Accessibility and Destigmatizing Disabilities.”

During the event, you will hear college and university leaders, community advocates, and educators discuss how they are using innovative approaches to increase inclusion on their campuses, within their communities, and beyond.

The “Shattering Stereotypes and Empowering People with Disabilities” keynote panelists include:

Mr. Thyson Halley, a lifelong Jersey City resident and recognized advocate and educator for people with hearing impairments. Last year, Halley in conjunction with the city’s Department of Health and Human Service, distributed see-through masks to staff and others at Zambella School PS 27 in Jersey City Heights, which is the designated school for deaf students.

Dr. David Nast, Director of Ramapo College of New Jersey's Office of Specialized Services, which facilitates equal access to the programs and activities at the college for students with documented disabilities. Regan Linton, one of the producers and directors of the film Imperfect. Also an actor, writer, advocate, educator, and change maker from Denver, CO, Regan uses a manual wheelchair due to a T-4 complete spinal cord injury from a car accident in college. Learn more about her 2021 film and watch the trailer here: https://bit.ly/3G8NEkY.

There will also be a workshop by Rutgers Bloustein School of Planning & Public Policy on Disability Identity, discussing how individuals see themselves through the lens of disability, their relationship with their identity and disability, and how to connect to resources that develop skills to further independence and self-determination.

In addition, there will be a student, alum, and faculty panel titled “Navigating Visible and Invisible Disabilities.”

Thank you to this year’s sponsors: Berkeley College, Bloomfield College, Essex County College, Kean University, Montclair State University, New Jersey City University, Rutgers University—New Brunswick, Saint Peter's University, Seton Hall University, and Stockton University (and its Student Senate).

We hope you can join us for this great learning experience!
