Last night, members of the Arbor Hose Fire Company traveled to Ground Zero to pay their respects and honor the 2,977 lives lost on September 11, 2001, including the 343 FDNY firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice.
During our visit, we also made a brief stop at FDNY Ten House, a firehouse that stood in the shadow of the World Trade Center and responded when our nation needed them most.
For many of our members who made the trip, September 11th is an event they were not yet born to witness. Yet they understand the tremendous sacrifice made that day and the responsibility their generation now carries to remember, honor, and continue the traditions of service and brotherhood demonstrated by those who came before them.
Twenty-five years later, their courage and selflessness continue to inspire a new generation of firefighters. The lessons of September 11th are not limited to those who lived through that day, they are passed down through the fire service from one generation to the next.
We remember those who went to work that morning and never returned home. We honor their families, their departments, and their sacrifice. Most importantly, we ensure their legacy lives on through our own commitment to serve.
Some witnessed it. Others learned about it. All of us have a responsibility to remember it.
25 years later, we still remember. We still honor. We will never forget.
