We honor the first responders who ran toward the darkness while others ran to safety—those who gave their lives that day and those we have lost since from 9/11-related illnesses.

May their courage, service, and sacrifice never be forgotten. 🇺🇸

Hold the door. Give the compliment. Check on your people. Help without being asked. It costs absolutely nothing to be a decent human.

But please don’t bring actual glitter to the firehouse…we’ll still be finding it in the engine compartments three mutual-aid calls from now. 😂🚒

The call ends—but the work doesn’t.

Hose must be washed. Equipment must be replaced. The cot must be cleaned. Reports must be finished. Then tired volunteers quietly return to the lives they dropped when the tones sounded.

The public sees the flashing lights. Today, we honor the work that happens after they’re gone.

Every empty chair tells a story.

A meal left unfinished. A birthday interrupted. A family whispering, “Be safe,” as the door closes.

Volunteer first responders don’t serve because they have extra time. They serve because someone has to answer—and their hearts won’t let them stay home.

They answer when someone is screaming.

They answer when someone is crying.

They answer when a voice on the other end can barely get the words out.

And somehow, no matter what they hear, they have to stay calm.

Before the lights.
Before the sirens.
Before the boots hit the ground.

There is a dispatcher.

They are the voice holding chaos together with a headset, a keyboard, and a steady tone.

They hear fear in its rawest form. They hear final words. They hear children crying, families begging, responders calling for help, and moments most people will never have to experience.

Then the call ends.

And another one comes in.

No time to process it. No time to carry the weight out loud. Just one deep breath, one more ring, one more person who needs them to answer.

Most people will never know their name.

They may never see their face.

But on the worst day of their life, they may remember that voice forever.

To every dispatcher sitting behind that console, carrying more than anyone realizes:

You are not “just dispatch.”

You are the first voice of hope.

The first link in the chain.

The unseen first responder.

And every single call matters. 💛🖤
